mig torch shroud

anyone know if the size of mig torch shroud affects the weld.
got 2 old murex synergic welders one with origional murex torch 500amp the other a 350amp with a tough gun torch.
welding 6mm & 5 mm 5083 plate
old murex torch give clean weld on ali yet tough gun which is a much bigger and clumsy looking torch seem to produce a weld with more smut any idea's.
both machines on 1.2 marine grade ali wire & pure argon.
shroud on tough gun is a lot wider could it affect the gas sheild or is it just a setting issue?

Maybe you need to increase the gas flow rate if you are using a torch with a larger gas shroud.

Also, you may need to adjust the arc length control on the machine slightly to account for the different torch, as the current transfer maybe slightly better/worse than you had with the Murex torch.

i'll give it a try ,been looking at the tuff gun site and i think i've been sold the wrong nozzel shroud combo as the one i have is rated at 500amp on web site part numbers the machine is only 350amp.
tuff gun nozzel is 5/8inch wide with 3-4mm recess of tip were murex is much smaller with flush tip
i see you can have different shroud preset depths some tips are level some are recessed anyone know the reason for it.
