Workshop conundrum.

My only experience of a quick release vice so far is that if I had a choice I'd always have one.

I've got a reasonably big Record just plonked on my bench* but it's sufficient weight that I has been used to clamp an entire Range Rover suspension strut in place to work on. Manhandling the strut with one hand and clamping it up with the other having the quick release was a wonderful feature.

* need to sort out a freebie magdrill I was given so that I can drill the mounting holes as the table top is 40mm thick, IF I miss the reinforcing braces.

6" for me, if you do any work involving unseizing rusty minging threads n whatnot you want as hefty a vice with as strong a bite as you can. Record no6 is a good vice imo.

Or put the bench on 100 mm lockable hard nylon castors so you can easily move it about as & when needed .

In the plant hire workshop I had four 8x4x 1" mild steel topped benches all situated in the middle of the workshop well away from any walls so things being repaired could be accesed from all sides of the bench. Really heavy stuff over a half a ton was fitted to 18 inch high elephant feet benches with ratchet tensioner chains for safety reasons . Where possible any highly torqued up nuts or bolts were slackened off whilst things were still fitted on the equipments .

I have a 1t gantry in my garage. I just lift it up. The bench probably weighs over 250kg now with the amount of steel under it. I’m not concerned about it going over.

I doubt you will ever want to move it when you get it installed as you will not want the items collected on top to roll off.
I bolted 2 steel drawer cabinets together and made a frame with wheels for it to stand on. I said to myself that there was nothing to be collected on top apart from my few books, there is now every sort of thing on top and the wheels have not turned since I made it, that is 2 years ago.

I have moved it a few times since making it to be fair. Currently blocking the width of my garage for a project I’m doing. I just leave everything on it and lift it.
