It's only got a poverty spec, 3speed gearbox (like mine). Ok if you don't do much screwcutting but a pain if you do.
Doesn't look like it's been outdoors that long so, if not too worn and well priced, could be a good buy. Be better if the cupboard was full of qctp holders, steadies, changewheels and a 4 jaw chuck though.
What's clamped to the gap? Some kind of anti crash stop? A school/collage lathe?

As above, if you want to use it for screwcutting, check that the change wheels are there.
There has been lots of discussion on here about the various speed ranges they came in. That one looks like 750rpm max. I am hazy on the details, but I think this was originally aimed at training establishments, so it may have had an easy life.

Not necessarily.
If you have an automatic feed trip on the carriage feed they're still incredibly useful:
• Move it to about the right place,
• Take the first cut with the DRO,
• Set the micrometer stop to touch the carriage,
• Every subsequent cut will stop in exactly the right place.
The DRO actually makes it easier to make use of the stop in that scenario.

The 140 has a spring-clutch overload mechanism for both feed shaft and leadscrew doesn't it?
I thought that was the feature that had made them such good machines for training establishments.
If its ex school its likely to not have seen a lot of use. The quick change toolpost looks rather too large for it but is worth having if its got a bunch of holders with it.
As for spring loaded clutch, there is one on the leadscrew but not sure about the feed shaft.
Main issues with ex school machines are thick technicians poking grease guns onto all the oil points & garming the things solid with axle grease.
Most school lathes i have seen in the last ten years have been dry as a witches wotsit from lack of use!
