Alternatives to Felt for shed roof?.

Hello all.

I have a couple of wooden sheds and it seems 5 years is as good as it gets for Felt before it starts letting water in.

Ideally I'd like some sort of tile or shingle or sheet that I can fasten to the OSB roof rather than re-felting them again.

Any suggestions?.

My 4mx3m Yardmaster metal shed is knocking on 20 years old now and still bone dry.

You need a better quality felt, one of my sheds is 8 years old and the other 10, both completely dry, the thicker felt is a lot dearer but it does last, it’s a kind of green colour as opposed to the thin cheap stuff which is black.

You need a full SBS mineral surfaced felt (4.5mm) Ebay is full of "slight seconds" that just has a colour variation to warrant "seconds." We use Rose roofing Modi Torch, google it and all is there

with sheds its down to skinflint owners what they want to pay as many dont want to pay for a really good roof seal

torch on felt its down to layers and theres a cost with them

you can use rubber or grp or your going back down to a metal roof so those are your options

these require boarding first

for the grp roofing kit its probably over 600.00+ for it
torch on felt will be around the same price
rubber i dont know the price of it but you need a couple of things for it as your gluing it

tile or shingle would mean you have an apex type of roof remember tiles have a slope limit same with concrete tiles

low slope roofs and you have to add more things to them board felt 2 levels of latts then tiles fitted

Either wrinkly tin sheets or quality torch on felt.

When felt is done right it will last decades. When I took down my old garage the roof was the hardest bit. That was 2 layers of Rose mineral felt which had been torched on properly about 20 years ago.

Wrinkly tin overlaps all round and is pretty indestructible.

That made me think. I know of a single garage that has a flat bitumen roof which I believe is the original roof from when the garage was built around 80 years ago. It has a small rectangular patch on it in one place over damage and the patch has been there at least 50 years

Built to last at a time when people were proud of the work they did

I had the flat dormers of our house done with fibreglass so that would be my choice for a shed as well

I built a spray rig to spray on the roofing tar with fiber in it....Roofingman will probably know the stuff, the "Fiberized Aluminized roof coating" they sell at all the building supply places, made

to be mopped on.

Just having my new garage roofed with shingles, done over a membrane.Looks really good will try and get a pic of it in a while.
