Log Book Question

I own a 1983 Ford Capri. I paid cash umpteen years ago to a guy who promised the log book that never materialised. I lost touch with him too thereafter. There's a good story behind the why of it all. To complicate things it was a Cat C write off.

Can I get a log book in my name?

Fill out a form from the post office.

Pay your £35.

They will write to him and ask if he’s sold it to you.

If he doesn’t reply or says yes, you will get a V5 through the post

You don't need to know it, just tick the box for not receiving it. They do the rest. OJCar's link is the one.

Before sending off anything it would be worth checking the vehicle is still on the system, log book may have been sent back as being scrapped. Run an mot or tax check.

Check the MOT history of a vehicle from 2005 onwards, including if it passed or failed, its mileage and why it failed, download MOT test certificate

Depending on when you acquired it the cat c may be an issue as it may have required a vic check before a new v5 could be issued.
Although vic checks have now been abolished so not sure what would/will happen if that was the case?

You might also have issues (fines) for failing to sorn it although somebody (the current registered keeper) should have been getting the reminders (or fines) for that so as said above, might be worth doing a bit of digging to find the current status of it before opening a can of worms..

apply for the log book and wait. it will either appear or you will get a letter from the dvla detailing what else they need or why they are not issuing it.

Nowadays the registered keeper is responsible for notifying a change of keeper.
I don't remember properly but so many years ago I think it was the new keepers responsibility.

I'd guess you either have to apply for a v5 using the date you actually got the car (risking multiple penalties for not sorning) or, use the current date and risk the existing keeper getting the fines who then informs dvla that the car was scrapped years ago (rather than admitting he failed to transfer)

Might be worth reading up on the rules as you might only get one fine for failing to sorn rather than one fine for each year...

I'm not quite sure if the OP bought it as a damaged cat5 to repair (ie paperwork not completed) or if it was just previously a cat5 before purchase but was all correctly back on the road at purchase?

I also vaguely remember the v5 application being free if it was salvage and the Original v5 had been returned to the insurance company or something?
