Interesting, I wasn't aware of any of this stuff.

The farmer who bought my step-dad's BTD8 crawler last year came to fetch it with a tractor and 15 ton trailer, he did a 50 mile round trip. But he also ran a haulage business so likely at least had an HGV licence.

Couple of my pals have done thier HGV recently because of this.

Driving Otherwise Than In Accordance is the big one. Means you’re uninsured as well, but that depends how benevolent the insurers are. If you’re a big customer and it’s a local insurer (eg NFU) they can say you were insured which at least negates that offence.

At least if you’ve got an HGV the rest is points and/or a fine which isn’t necessarily huge for most people. Especially if you’ve a clean licence.

the reason why im asking is why cant you have a homemade trailer for the field that can be transported on the back of another trailer

or is there regs that is still needed ?

PUWER if it’s a farm. Ie a work environment.

If it’s your own private field and not a business you can do what you want.

Having a trailer on a trailer is a massive pain in the ****. You might as well have one trailer that’s road legal.

but farmers want to pull overladen trailers from fields via a tractor hitch fair comment for pulling certain machinery i agree on a tractor is best suited for field work

but once vehicles go onto the road they should be bound with the over weight restrictions that many trailers are well over weight

as goes for the hitch on the tractor it has its uses elsewhere with different machernery being pulled with it but the trailer is one point compared to other things being pulled

personally i think its about time they did spot checks on farm vehicles and trailers and lets see how fast you farmers scream when your fined for over weight and how road worthy your vehicles are

i bet many of the farmers are well over weight

We're not on the roads a huge amount and we get stopped and checked over a good few times a year. Our big trailers have a huge volume but when we're on grass or wholecrop rarely get more than 10 ton in them.

Unless it’s during the course of agricultural, forestry or fisheries then it’s haulage.

The example I was given, and I know someone who got nicked for this, is a farmer going to town to get bulk bags of fertiliser on his trailer. As it’s not actual farming operations, ie taking fertiliser to the field to be spread, then that’s haulage.

So the tractor / trailer becomes a lorry and there fore needs HGV licenses, MOTs and so on and so on.

You can MOT an agricultural tractor as a HGV Category T and stay on the right side of things but then it’s a HGV and not a tractor so you don’t get agri exemptions.

You can’t have your cake and eat it basically.

Much of the enforcement depends on local / regional DVSA and Policing attitudes

For some it’s a huge thing, other forces couldn’t care less and obsess over other things like motorbikes or whatever.

He shouldn't have been done for that as you're allowed to collect inputs for your farm on normal ag rules. Where it gets complicated is contractors and contract farming setups.

Got off with it but was a lot of hastle.

Basically stretched the truth.

I think he got tugged initially for something else. That then developed into what they could find. They fined him for insufficient rated ratchet straps and all sorts.

Most of it got chucked out.

He is a friend but also a complete cock so probably didn’t help his case one iota when he initially got stopped.

A lot of farmers down in East anglia are in co-OPs so you are never more than 7 miles from any point of the ‘company’ land. Police hate it but very little they can do. Is that the same your way?

Thete's a few big contract farmers round here, they cover big distances so not sure how it all works.

We're about 7 miles from end to end and everything is for the farm, no contract setups.

ours are a little spread out due to the hills most of it is accessed by the roads

due to the hills long trailers are not used but shorter ones are used more

you also dont see many over height hay vans or trailers 2 bales stacked higher above the cab of the tractors either

We only go 2 high as well, admittedly our bales are 1.3m high.

First time I've seen a fifth wheel here albeit it was a USA car show this did tow another pick up truck on the trailer.

Local garda probably said "ach itll be grand"

Ahh.
I've seen enough of top gear to see that UK plates are very long and skinny, so I wondered how they got them in the small space in the middle on the back.

That looks like a "Texas Pick up" where modders use an F-700 chassis to start with.

Note the front clip is different from the pick up version (the whole hood, front grill & fenders hinge up, hinges on front bumper see the hand grip on top center), the cab is standard though.
Saddle tanks too. Tires look like 10.00 -20's.

James....they did sell some with Marmon-Harrington 4x4 conversions under them, mostly for the oil patch. I don't think during that era Ford offered 4x4 as factory.

Edit, I can just make out the "F-700" on the side, my original text was based on memory.
