Last year my commercial policy was £800, the renewal came through (Autonet) as £1,400. Five minutes on MoneySupermarket and I've gone with Axa for less than £500.

I always set out with good intentions to do so, but some years I forget/CBA. A big jump up like that provides ample motivation to make sure I do.

With all the twists and turns in the smallprint its tough to get a true comparison. The commercial any driver policies are the killer. I think we pay about £1,500 pa for each of the small vans/4x4`s.

That's one area I don't have to worry about, it's just me driving it.

While I was on van stuff I had a quick look at the cost to replace it as I bought it new in 2014 and it'll hit 100,000 this year and be ten years old next. To replace it with the same spec from Vauxhall £32,000 + VAT Transit is more than that and VW/Merc are hilarious. Duck that!

You did well to get yours down, even after all the comparisons & ducking & diving mine still went up by 25% - no change in circs they're just robbing barstewards

Agreed. I understand an increase even if I don't like it, but I think the last lot were quoting to lose which they do when the underwriters have to much risk on their books apparently.

i got a good deal on my new pug van under 400 then they wanted £48o went with another agency and got it for 420 for the last 2 years with the same insurance company so no hassle changing agents as they allready had all my details

I just got the multi car renewel in the post this morning ( cars not van though , not due yet )
last year £534.79 two cars three drivers , this year they want £ 738 04 you can work that out for yourself that's Admiral .

Currently with Admiral too…..2car policy, last year it was sub £400 for both…this yr nearly £600….
Checked with LV, £377….Go figure..
Actually had to contact Admiral, coz it was on auto renew, struggled to get across that their policy was dearer and wasnt worth discussing……finally got there in the end..

I don't do huge miles so that may be a factor, only have it down for 5,000 miles annually.
No voluntary excess but £250 compulsory.

Postcode is the biggest factor, followed by what you do for a living, if it's business use and mileage.

Yep, postcode likely in my favour, it is for business use for transporting my own goods etc but as said only £5000 miles.

I imagine mine will be loaded because of a big city postcode, 12,000 miles a year, towing a trailer, insuring the trailer as well as the van, no doubt there will be other things which make it more expensive too like it being blue.

I know one thing which loads Birmingham postcodes for van insurance is the amount of dodgy claims by scammers. Apparently they prefer vans to cars for claiming against. Another is the shockingly bad standard of driving, I think I'm right in saying that 'Burger Island' has the highest accident rate for any roundabout in the UK which is a combination of fraudulent claims and bad driving.
