Seriously - it upsets me that people are forced to take such liberties with their safety. He's probably got the best welding set for miles. Someone should send him a glove or two... and arc eye must be what he goes to bed with every night!

A while ago I posted some photos of an optician's machine I saw thrown out in South London. These things could easily be reconditioned and sent out to the third world.
I will do some research and see if there is an organisation that we can donate our old welding equipment to.

It is not likely they can build an inverter from just scrap metal and wire you find lying around.
That is not a "old welder" it is one hand wound and made from scrap.

"Robust" in the sense that by design they are easy to build, easy to use, and easy to repair. In this case, I agree it looks like it is built out of scrap. But it could just as easily have been built from the remains of a burnt-out welder or two.
I like the string used to hold the laminations together. Not even E/I or U/T laminations, just lots of strips of metal held together by hope and twine. Pieces of cardboard to protect the windings from the sharp edges of the laminations. And what looks like cloth as insulation on the secondary windings.
It is a testament to what can be achieved with so little given sufficient motivation. Think of the teams of kids who will enjoy playing football with their newly-welded football net frames. Or other construction projects made possible with this "crude" arc welder.

One of my lecturers said when he went to india years back you;d see cars broken down int he street and people stripping the batterys apart changing individual cels to get it running again
We really do have it quite easy here! well they dont have rust to contend with so its a fiar trade off i guess :lol:

The second picture gives a good view of the side of the laminations. In the home-made transformer the laminations are not so nicely packed!

Yes, looks like soft metal and very thin. Most transformers use hard rolled steel that is bluish in color and does not rust that much. Must be old tin cans or something.
He could have welded the core once he got it together
