Stopping tools rusting

Just wondering if anyone has used any of these products and are the effective. Storing tools in the back of a van and they obviously being in the Scottish highlands on occasion getting put away wet etc not much I can do about it unfortunately. Seen these two products and wondered if anyone has experience with them or another method that works.

Does the van have air-con? If so can you open up the rear to the cab for air-conditioning purposes because that'll help dry the air.

I haven’t used the products you mentioned but I clean my tools using WD40 and it seems to help prevent rust forming on them.

I'd just spray a bit of AC90 on them

Silica gel in the drawers/ boxes and wipe tools down with Ac90 or similar

Oh they get used though it’s not enough and there is they occasional idle period.

Thats a problem Robbie, gagging the mothballed tools in something that will protect them properly is not really going to be an option. You are down to a frequent dusting with wd40 and a wipe off before use.

Engine oil, wipe them enough to not be ****ty.

Over cleaning is the worst but I also hate dirty tools.

Using them all regularly and wiping/cleaning them systematically with an oily rag is
the ultimate solution.

No but the tool space is open to the front cab so it dose get heated and ventilated a bit.

Seen these two products and wondered if anyone has experience with them

Used to use the VCI capsules at work when laying up machinery. I think that they need quite an enclosed space to work, and that the back of a van would be too draughty / opened too often for them to do much good. They'd probably work OK in a toolbox, but not convinced that they would cope if there were actual drops of water on things.

I used to use the Zerust and/or Cortec VCI emitter capsules in the toolboxes I carried in the car and they were pretty effective. Working on landfill sites and putting things away damp, they kept plated spanners and sockets pretty much rust free. Things like pliers tended to show some surface rust, but much less than without the VCI emitters, and I was less than diligent about drying stuff off before putting it away, though I'd generally give things a quick towelling off when properly wet.

They are good enough that I regard not using them as silly, and I still use them in all my solid toolboxes. The main reason I stopped using them for the stuff I grab for site is that I started using bags instead of boxes.

VCI paper works well. I haven't tried the vci emitters yetZ

I’ve used Briwax with some success, I also stuff any silica gel bags I get in parcels in the tool bag. There is a special product for this but expensive and probably snake oil. Although snake oil might work now I think of it.

Mine always get cleaned. No matter what. I get sick of rusty tools! It doesn’t take long for a quick wipe to get the moisture off, that’s all they need.

On the occasion everything just gets chucked in at the end of a job I’ll drag it all out and clean it once I’m home.

Your worst enemy is going to be leaving them when you go away. Cleaning them before you do and spraying ACF 50 or something is about all you can do I reckon.

Chuck the lot in a bucket of diesel…..they wont rust. Wipe with rag and use.

I've been using the ToolGuard vci capsules, seem to work well.
Had them in tool boxes, drawers and even in the mig to stop the wire going in a workshop with very variable dew point & humidity levels.
I'm sure there'll be cries of horror - contaminated weld etc. - seems fine haven't noticed any issues & best of all I can leave the mig for a while & then go back to it without any worries
They also do little wet wipes which once used can be left in boxes& drawers to continue emitting.
Only downside is that they're expensive, all of them, no matter the brand
