I literally had no idea what was being made until the last part of the video. I also can't believe how strong these sand castings were, that people were standing on top of them!

One question - what's going on here with all the holes and what I presume is compressed air being blown into them? Is that what makes the sand structure so strong?

Next question: How hot is this pit that they can throw in clutch plates & brake disks and watch them melt? (bonus question: who wants to be inhaling the residue?)

Sodium silicate iirc. The same stuff they use for magic radseal. Add Co2...

The big casting pit at Peterbrotherhood's Rhubarb Bridge site was massive , In about 1988, they were digging it out for a super sized cast when lo & be hold they found the biggest size German WW2 viable bomb buried away in one corner of the 40 foot or so deep pit .
My pal who worked there was shocked , white faced , when it was discovered as he often worked in the immediate area

I've not yet watched this, but I assume that it's CO2. Used to set the sodium silicate mixed with the sand.

I’m not surprised he was ashen....
Just watched that through, now I know where all the fridge freezer motors and housings go..
