Evinrude 70 VRO outboard impeller change

Struggling a bit. I can’t find a way of disconnecting the shift linkage. Plenty of youtube vids, but the clamp is different.

Hard to get a picture, but this is looking from the front, with the shift rod descending to the bottom left towards the gearbox. The actuator arm fits into the ally clamp just above, and I’ve loosened the bolt. Further back, the shift rod pivots on a pin in that clamp.

Long time since I have played with one of these, but is it the one where you remove the water intake grill to allow access to the shift rod coupling?

Not done this for years, from a distant memory you need to remove the gear and throttle linkages and remove the shift pin then push the gear linkage towards the engine and rotate the lower unit to release.

It only takes a slight turn of the ingoing shaft when taking the lower leg off to put them out of shape..just as long as before refitting you get them in the correct orientation as per motor rotation...99% of the time they self correct on start up anyway. Really miss my boats

No, I think it's an offset cam, normally you'd have a squish plate, no idea, the actual name, so that strike me as normal, I don't do out boards, too bloody fiddly, only in boards.

Raw sea water pumps, God I know all about them, oh yeah.

I agree, is basically a Jabsco pump. Plenty how to videos

Sounds about right, when I played about with boats, had a tandem decked 16’6” Reiver, and an 85 yam. Did a bit of work in it, Head skimmed, fly wheel lightened, bit of port polishing, different reeds, 60 Mariner leg, to get engine lower on the transom, while still running the prop high, Ss mounts, bigger carbs.……used to burn 5 gallon an hour flat out. But it was fun.

Tried to get over a sand bar on a falling tide one day..doing 65 mph in 20 ft of water and within a nano second the water dropped to 2 ft, the hole you see in the sand is what i dug with the prop trying to get out to no avail..had to wait 7 hours for the water to return only to find out i had fried my stator look at the sand between the cylinders in the jackets That rebuild cost me £1200 in parts. expensive hobby i will tell you. On a closing note my high 5 prop was razor sharp after cutting the sand for a frantic 5 mins trying to get back into the deep.

Yes an expensive hobby. I bought a new OMC prop, had it rebushed for the Yamaha, higher pitch…..1st outing, hit a bit of wood, only two blades! £425 was a lot of money in 85
