Anyway, I found another site that describes the chemistry of the process and it is pretty much as I described, though the formulae I gave were not accurate: calcium carbonate is CaCO3; calcium oxide is CaCO; and calcium hydroxide is Ca(OH)2. I think I was close enough to inspire anyone interested in the process. It's one of the oldest chemical processes known to man. Really it is a few simple reactions and knowing how it works makes it even more fascinating and, dare I say it again, magical.

We used to use
9 soft sand
3 lime (builders)
1 opc
but we were plebs, using a shovel* as a measure
*not that it changes the proportions, but the shovel was about 2/3 the length of a normal one. "We worn it down"
but it did make loading the mixer easier

Fractioning it down, (I've just had 4 pints of British Bulldog at The Rising Sun) that's nom. 3 soft / 1 lime / 0.5 OPC, similar to my derived mix, less the 1 of sharp.
