Worth replacing 15 year old fridge - energy savings?

I am on about the cheapest tariff believe it or not. I am from NI. I did move back to Power NI a couple years back as they were / are the cheapest for me.

I dont think it will make much of a difference changing meter. Will check rates again and happy to stand corrected. I just hate topping up the damn thing now!



Short answer = no.

My oil boiler is about 50 metres away from the gravity cylinder. And gravity circuit only not fully pumped from boiler.

The HW is on economy 7 timer and highly insulated so that works well for me. It comes on and runs on cheap electric and stays warm all day.

Prepayment meters are stupid expensive, it’s even been on the news over the last few weeks

Some one that lives in a big house and asking for cost efficient apcances and doesn’t u detstabd the premium costs if ore payment is Making my brain hurt

Id look at anything thats heating like an electric cooker. We bought a fancy 9 in 1 air fryer thing. Electric consumption has dropped a fair bit as shes not using the 32 amp cooker

its only using the full 30 amp load if everything is turned on and even then its not constantly pulling that load because everything is on thermostats

a lot of fridges that are built in wernt lasting long because of no ventilation and running a lot longer than a free standing one would. they should be vented top and bottom

I only ask as ours is the same, Ive often wondered about putting vents in the worktop. We dont want to get rid as iy has sliding drawers, and Im yet to find another manufacturer to replace it. (Bosch no longer produce a fridge or freezer with sliding drawers)

Still it's cheaper monthly bill and that's what I'll do.

I have a crazy busy day job is my excuse. I'll ring them and get meter changed.

Ive got a 30 year old fridge and if your fridge is using £2 a day that is more electricity than my whole house.......how big is your fridge, maybe get a smaller one if there is only two of you

Modern inverter fridges are much more efficient. I have yet to see the reliability factor though.
A 500 litre fridge inverter style uses about 300 watts average as opposed to about 600 watts conventional.
( about means they vary brand to brand ).
I dont know what gas you use in GB, but in Au now its basically LPG with a dash of bitters er
I mean Freon but I am unsure of the model of freon. R34A ??. ( read bloody hopeless at cooling )
Make sure your fridge can breath!!, i.e. its not stuck inside a trendy cupboard style thing.
Clean the condensor at the back ( big tubular radiator thingy ) If its even slightly dusty it will lose efficiency.
Make sure the sun isnt shining on the fridge. Make sure the door seals are clean and flexible, they are cheap and easy to change.
Of course, you havent positioned the fridge right next to the stove/heater etc etc.

Just some thoughts.

Also one thing not factored into those unit rates I posted is that when topping up certain amounts on PowerNi website you get free extra credit.

So I'd say it works out the same if not penny's cheaper a month on prepayment.

I knew it wasn't massively off or if would have been gone much sooner.

I'll do the full sums in the coming days and post details on the actual consumption.

I'd be looking at more insulation...did the floors in our place and that made a massive difference which surprised me (suspended wood floors).

I remember looking at our fridges and being surprised about the consumption. Problem is they're always on (or kicking in). I have one in the garage which really doesn't help either!

When (if) I retire I'm planning on downsizing to an eco home...with land. I'm fed up of being on the hook to energy companies!

First thing I want to check is the fridge. Its a 15 year old roughly American fridge freezer. Whirlpool brand. I think it must be using about £2 a day or something like that and want to do the comparison on replacing it with a modern efficient one.

Anyone have thoughts on what else to check out consumption wise? Have you noticed an improvement when updating a fridge etc? Given it runs 24/7 it's on my radar now because something isn't right.

£2 a day just for the fridge?? My whole bungalow doesn't use £2 a day, and I have a tall fridge/freezer.

Yes very true and my house had little to no insulation and single glazed windows. During that real bad freeze about 10 years ago there was ice on the bedroom window inside!

I have got the cavity walls fully pumped silver bead, got 50mm triple glazed pvc windows and added 400mm rockwool In loft.

Still a 70s draughty house but now better insulated than most

Thats the sort of thing I was wondering about and want to calculate.

First I need to see what mine is using I'm blaming it but could be fa to do with it

I have never cleaned the condenser- must check it!!
