Annoying chuck and key

Anyone come up with any possible alternatives please..

I’ve a Rotabroach Commando mag drill which is great but, It’s got a keyed chuck and it just will not grip twist drills of any size.. You tighten the chuck as tight as you can which is tough in itself and it’s not long before you have to stop drilling and tighten the chuck again.. I’ve tried square shank bits which are no real improvement with this chuck.. The bits are sharp i’m using coolant and not excessive pressure.. ?

I’ve tried square shank bits

Square shank = four sides. Drill chuck = three sides.

You could try grinding three flats on the drill bits.

I am not sure you would necessarily need the adaptor shown above as your drill chuck is already on some kind of arbor. You did not say that the fit between the arbor and spindle or arbor and chuck was a problem, so why spend on something you do not need? Pop the chuck you have off its arbor and replace it with a better quality item.

Once a drill bit has slipped in a chuck its virtually impossible for a chuck to grip it again, try a new drill bit and munch it up tight.My limp wristed guys are good at destroying drill bits.

yes all 1 piece. I use them regular to drill smaller sizer holes with the mag drill

Get a decent chuck, something like a genuine jacobs, rohm or the likes not a Chinese no name. I don’t normally suffer with the issues you’re having.
Those Weldon drills look expensive…

The chuck is likely the problem. Buy a good quality Rohm chuck.

You say that, but I have at least one Rohm-branded chuck that has more runout than the England cricket team.

As long as they're not the ones with a liquid core, which is under high pressure.

There's no need to put 3 flats on a bit. One will do. Don't go daft, a quick kiss with the grinder, just enough for one of the jaws to find it, by slowly twist the drill between your fingers as you tighten the chuck. There is enough play in a drill chuck to allow the mismatch and still drill true.

I use an approx 6 inch tube on the chuck key and tighten all three positions on the chuck, this is in the lathe and the drill press.

I had a chinese chuck that did this. I pulled it apart and sanded the jaw faces with 600 paper.
I also sanded all my drill bits that had been burnt using the chuck.
All good after that. As brad says, use a decent chuck!!.
