anyone use a coin sorter/counter?

I hate sorting/counting change from the till at work before banking it

I remember buying a change sorter for my dad as a Christmas present when I was a kid... but it was rubbish - looking around the net they're still on sale!

I normally stock change up and then sort it all at once, so easily a few hundred quid so figure I need something decent not cheap/plastic internals

The industrial looking ones are £2000+ for that much I'll just keep doing it by hand

My sister used to cash up in a shop. She got my dad made a sorter thing from a sheet of wood, it had a column for each coin type, she'd stack the coins in the columns and the columns were marked where the coin bag quantities were. Simple, and worked very fast.

The local vending machine company had one on a service cart, wheeled around to all the machines. It was a hand crank bowl on an angle, certainly didn't look like over $250 there.

guy i do work for has one and pays me in 1 pound coins when i checked he was shy of 3 quid from a grand he buys the materials so i just bought extra and kept it .about a tenners worth for his cheek

Over here we get little plastic moulds, allows you to decant coinage of different sizes, into little rolls, which are easy to count, and weigh in at the bank.

Banks supply them for free.

Buy some divider drawers for the till so each type of coin is stored separately.

Then all you need is a coin weigher. I think (but am not positive) that the bank will take 1p and 2p mixed.

Ask your bank how much they charge to process mixed coinage. Are bank charges claimable as a business expense?

My bank (RBS) has a machine where you can dump a bag of loose mixed change and it adds it all up - and its free of charge unlike those thieving machines you see in some supermarkets.

A few - you have to know where to look... My nearest branch is about 8 miles away, so could be worse.

my bank doesn't have a coin machine... I looked into changing to a bank that does but the ones that I looked at have limits for how much you can use it per week/month/year in the small print :-(

there's a few on ebay around the £100 mark which I'd be fine with... was just hoping someone had one and could tell me if it's any good

there's a few on thingverse but I lent my 3D printer to a guy to print NHS masks and never saw it again

I have heard locally of drug dealers etc using the coin counters in the local supermarkets regular.

Aka they are selling small amounts of whatever and coming in semi regular with several hundred pounds of coins to exchange. Sometimes maxing out the machine! I guess if its all tax free then they take the 10% hit or whatever it charges. Criminal and a loop hole at present it seems.

I've only been counting the bigger stuff (which is what we normally get anyway) I've got a pile or 1p 2p and 5p I haven't touched... going to through them in the coin machine at asda... don;t mind losting a % of those... just don;t want to put the £2 £1 coins in etc.

I doubt that this is what you're looking for, but for counting coins manually it's sorta, kinda handy. This particular one is a vintage cast-aluminium coin stacker/counter for 50 US pennies. When it's full, there is just enough room around the coins to slide a paper tube/wrapper over the coins. I'm guessing it's similar to what @Barking Mat mentioned.

My father had some thing like this years ago, stacks counted then into cash bags.

ideal project for the 3d printerists.

seems bizzare in this day and age with the drive to contactless. But cash is still popular, as its real money, not electronic.

This may sound like a dumb idea but a cheap tare weight scale will see you right.
