Teeing into water main

Hi guys ,. Just teeing into the house supply to feed the garage and a supply up to my little field .
I ideally want to tee in where the fittings are and build a mini inspection chamber just so I can make as sure the joint is ok in th re future .

I bought the small cover but it's an inch too wide to fit ..

Anyone any ideas for a smaller diameter cover ? Cheers guys

How small does your cover need to be? Less than 275mm?

Can't you get away with trimming-dpwn the cover you bought by 12.5mm each side?

i would tee it and also fit a stop tap in the same hole at least you can shut it off

only issue means its more of a rectangle manhole cover

Make it bigger, you wouldn't get two arms down that size cover if you wanted to tighten/change anything in the future

There is a 200mm range available, 200mm referring to the upstand pipe size not the lid size. Lids for these are around 240mm but as @MoreWellie says you won't be able to get two hands down there to maintain anything!

A stop valve is a good idea to put in.
If the stop valve is next to the tee just use a standard lid and riser over the stop valve. If the tee starts leaking you'll see water in the bottom in no time anyway.

I made a brick box and fabricated a steel cover for it some time ago for a water pipe junction.. I agree if it's too small it'll be a pig to access the fittings if you need to.

In another 20 posts time it will have a brick shed built over it with a look out tower to check for leaks

The fittings are made to be maintainance free, just fit it, pressurise before you bury it and sleep easy

Well @GRW had a good suggestion trim them down a bit but can only trim the larger cover about 15 mm so not quite enough . I will fit a stop tap on the branch ,I was just gonna fit one where it comes up in the garage ( or will do ) .

.... @brightspark good suggestion but like has been said bit too tight for access .

Need as close to 11" as possible ( ooh matron ;0)

Go to a proper civils or pipe place, don't bother with builders merchants they just don't carry the stock and are expensive. Somewhere specialising in underground drainage and ducting will have something off the shelf. Infact they should have a telescopic stopcock box so no need to build the chamber

Also make sure if installing them like the first picture make sure the two fittings are connected by a pipe atleast 6in long otherwise you assemble them and then can't get them apart again as you can't open the little grippy collar up

@Agrismith erm might be a bit late I've fitted the tee and got a stopcock. Kept it compact ,hopefully I'll never have to take it apart again !
Of cource when I turned the stopcock off (the house supply ) it's a combined stopcock /meter and the plastic body is split and spraying out .
Severn Trent have changed every stop cock /meter in the hamlet tat least twice cos they split/leak , now they have another one too do !

fit another stopcock to the field from the garage then you have 2 points to shut off

one to the field just incase it burts then garage is still usable
the one you just fitted is for the garage and field feeds
the house remains on the mains feed

and fit a stop tap inside of the garage its worth doing this way

Keep it simple. Fit it properly and check the pipe isn't scored before your fit the fittings. If you genuinely need a stopcock there, and a manhole, why not. But also, why not put the tap in the shed, where it'll be easy to access... Then you can bury those joins. I doubt you'll regret it. A far easier way to check for leaks is to turn off the ends and watch the meter.

Also, if you can get away without the elbow, by radiusing the pipe, there are two fewer joins to seal. Not so neat or easy to map but more reliable.

If it's been a bit scuffed or whatever I've given it a rub with some emery cloth or whatever, then assembled the fitting adding a good dob of boss white into the equation
