We loved it as kids I was 2 until 5 I think when my mum worked thereFunnily enough I was thinking about Bedford and the places I worked in the 80s, did a lot in the chocolate factory and had access to the seconds shop, soon got bored with it though! used to do a lot at a foundry where they made the big cast backbones for pianos, cant remember where it was now, Jordans Mill where they did the cereals and never ate cereal again after working there! some big old train repair places, the list was endless
They took over Spring Steel Productions on Fulbourne Road and then, when the council made a land grab on the factory, relocated around Epping, I seem to recall.Another Walthamstow one was Goss Springs, looks like they have relocated now, they used to be in Victoria rd E17

Your such a positive joy of energyall our textile mills are gone in my area
even the brickyard has gone and they support under the blackpool tower
plentiful sources of coal, iron ore and soft water saw its rapid expansion as a manufacturer of textiles, especially wool
textile industry shifted in manufacturing towards emerging and developing countries like China who could undercut the UK industries thanks to low wages, lengthy working hours and untapped natural resources
coals and iron ore has gone
soft water well thats down to poor managment by yorkshire water and the privatisation of it
we have the dams or better known as we had the dams for good supply where we live we should never run out of water unless its sold or miss managed dams shut down never rebuilt all for cost cutting
Tractors and televisions were made in the city all gone
this what it says it has
the finance, chemical, electronics, engineering
electronics isnt worth bothering with its small select companies workforce only small
engineering is near on non existant
chemical the area is full of that but i can tell you this if anyone wants the bopal crap on your doorstep, your all welcome to it
its not welcomed here by the residents and we was never asked if we wanted it on our doorstep
what a lodge of rubbish most of our industry/tech is now abroad and if that statement was true we would have pulled out of a recession much more quickerr when the banks screwed up in 2008-2009I hate comments like this
Just because we don't build (as many) lathes, the UK is a world leader in manufacturing
One example I have recently been involved in

The UK manufacturers many, many, many things. All too easy to bemoan that we don't send children into mills and up chimneys any more

Hurco mills are at least partially built in High Wycombe, I had a look around the other week.Mazak have a site in Coventry where they assemble machines too, haven't got to visit that one yet though.

we had more industry in the past than we did in 2008 and we was on our knees then and only crawled out of a long recession that we never pulled out since 2008-9

British recessions: a short history
From boom to bust after the first world war and 20% inflation under Margaret Thatcher, we have faced economic hardship beforewww.theguardian.com
im sorry but if you think we can pull out of recession on the basis of londons data ( digital (digital industry, digital by default ) ) then your dreaming as much as those running the country
its been tried it failed misrebly after the bank crash we never fully pulled out of that recession and south shoring up peoples homes so they didnt crash the housing market also had another effect as well all caused by the banks mishanderling of the loans
the virus, the ultimate crash of the worlds systems we are now back in a long recession
