Temporary concrete mix

A bit of advice from the builders on here please. My daughter has had an internal wall removed in her kitchen. It's an old farmhouse and the floors either side of the resulting 2" deep trench are sandstone flags. It's about 4 or 5" wide.. they have a toddler., Just walking. I'm worried he's going to fall down it and at worse banging his head.
They will be refitting the kitchen and relaying the floor eventually...
I need to fill the trench with something that does the job, but is easy to get out eventually..
I was thinking a few bags of all in ballast from Wickes with a little cement maybe 7 or 8:1 or would sharp sand be ok similar strength 7 or8:1. I'm not bothered about it cracking a little.

you may find it dusts, so stick a good gloop of PVA in the mix

Cling film in bottom of the trench, numerous layers, then fill with muck of your choice.

just lay a bit of board over the gap glued down with mastic how long is it going to be like it ?

or as you said fill up to 1,5 inch from the top and cement the top when you want it gone use a hammer to break the top layer

Yeah thought about boards but the little fella may trip, he's only been walking a week or two...only a couple of inches deep, so will probs go straight in with a weak sharp sand cement mix..

You could...

Cut a bit of floor board to fit the gap. Pack the underside with Celotex or polystyrene to within a couple of inches of the underside of the board. Go nuts with the expanding foam gun. Weight the board down level and let it set. Trim the excess.

Hmmm could get messy. The dog loves expanding foam,! Often has it stuck to his fur and nose!

if hes that young and the flooring is hard stair gate to stop him going in there

or a few dobs of cement to lay a piece of wood in the gap at the right hight and easy to pull up when needed if you get my meaning ?

Any oil even veg or sunflower oil sprayed finely over the surface will stop cent bonding to it properly.
Spray it on with a £5 weedkiller spray bottle then use sand and cement( building or sharp will both work use whatever is cheaper) don't use ballast as at 2in it won't benefit and won't tamp down as nicely. If you want it done quickly then rapid set cement or just use postmix and will be set in an hour

personally id just fill with sand or soil as its been dug up anyway if they are removing the stone floor

though it would be just as easy to lay a layer of stone flag down

we have the stone flags in our houses, here ours is stone flag with red ashfelt on it and it does sweat rather well
