Heating my shed idea?

Just an idea.!
I am virtually off grid, so trying to find a heating solution.
What about using wind or solar energy to charge a EV car battery during the day.
would that produce enough energy to heat a water radiator, thus warding off the frost.?
My shed is 64sq metres and has 6” of rockwool insulation all round.
Any better ideas?

A Tilley heater or an Aladdin lamp will do very well.

Depends how big your battery is in terms of kWh. My PHEV has 12.5 kWh battery capacity so will power a 1 kW electric heater for 12.5 hours - in theory. It also depends how big your generation capacity is to be able to charge it up. My PV panels have produced a daily output of bewteen 0.67 and 15.16 kW to date this year. Sadly when you might need the electrical heating the most could be when you have least generation. Not always though.

Or a solar panel charging a battery which runs one of these Chinese diesel heaters if you don’t want the work involved in chopping, storing and drying wood for a woodstove as you don’t want to be buying wood these days at £8 for a tiny bag of dried wood which would last one day.
I spend a lot of time making sure I’ve a winters supply and it starts about now for next winter.

How much do you have to invest in solar panels, converters and all that jazz, to charge a car, before even considering heating your shed / workshop.

one of those cheap diesel heaters would likely work well, takes very litle battery power once its running, and they are very frugal on fuel

Diesel heater yeah, but an electric vehicle, that'll take some investment I'd imagine.

Well as we all know its gona get nippy soon and last winter was bloody freezin in shed. Have a cheapo chinese diesel heater which was useless, elec`y blow heater was to costly, aswell as the diesel heat actually for what it did. @gaz1 not sure what you will think but as said, use what i have...

i know hes happy enough with his build but he still needs some adjustment to the build of his

they are powerful enough to heat a large area rather well all depends on there build but they do conserve on wood rather well 1, and a quarter cord of wood per canadian winter

whilst this type will heat a shop 2000 squ.ft stick built 6x2s, insulated walls 10 ft. high

i dont bother with that i just get a circular saw cut the latts off the block of wood unless its chipboard then they get pulled off

and the whole lot gets thrown into the fire retrive the nails afterwards when i clean out the system

That's the way I've seen it done, no need for a crowbar.

Yeah, but, cut up pallets and oak and chestnut are not the same kettle of fish.

most of the time a club hammer will smash those 5x4 blocks off the nails

then i flatten the nails by standing on the wood and then trim the latts to size in my case 9" length

gives me plenty of starters and i can stack the rest as blocks

its all i use on my rocket stove and i get 3hrs worth of heat from pallet wood
