Nissan X-trail - what do the group think?

Hi All,
In my search for a vehicle I have found one of these. I really know nothing about cars (except for Land Rovers) so any guidance would be appreciated.

Nissan X-trail
2.0 dCi Aventura Explorer SUV 5dr Diesel Auto 4WD Euro 4 (150 ps)
2008 (58 reg) 124k on the clock.
Price £3850

What to watch out for etc. It has a towbar and is an auto so it nearly meets my criteria (I wanted petrol but cannot find anything suitable less than £7k and I no longer want to spend that much!).

Did some suspension work on one while it was in a garage I worked in for a day to help out. Opinion was engine was a horrible rattle box when cold, but I have heard they are pretty much bomb proof. The top strut bearings were stupid Teflon things that I’d say weren’t going to last overly long. The suspension was surprisingly tough and heavy duty looking with good heavy duty drive line components. Probably the only cross/soft reader over I’d by bar the freelander 2 which would be first choice as I just prefer land rovers and slightly more refined. Seemingly have some good off-road ability as well which if important is only a good thing.

As with all jap stuff tin worm is usually the killer. Parts will be more expensive than a freelander but probably will last longer so depends on how long term you feel like keeping the car.

I don’t think there is anything horrific, they won’t be any worse than others in this class. The engine is a Renault lump, and Renault diesels were always middle of the road in terms of reliability, normally better than psa (Peugeot / ford).
They weren’t meant to be great on fuel though and weren’t very capable off the tarmac. Always praised with the towing fraternity.
As above watch for rust. My experience with Japanese is the mechanicals last well, nuts and bolts tend to come apart but the body and chassis suffer with rot and the Japanese steels are usually on the thinner side.

Make sure the timing chain is quiet.

Thanks for the replies. It won't be a long term vehicle around 2 years just long enough to get the 90 converted to auto box
I will listen to the engine, I will ask the seller to not start it until I get there as I am aware of the trick of warming up the engine!

Mate of my brother had months of problems with his, accelerator pedal is electric, this failed, impossible to find a new or replacement one.

I believe the older models were more traditional, i.e. not electric throttle control.

It would be nice to know when they changed. It is a 2008 so probably OK (he asks hopefully!).

Same reply really, I would love a CRV but none that are within a reasonable distance, price and have a towbar. There was one but I rang the seller and he was a vague as they come. I didn't fancy driving 60 miles to find out it was junk!

There is a colorado On ebay for 3k with 160k.

Sadly buying used cars is a drawn out process, that is very time consuming. Another to consider in that size might be kia Sportage of Hyundai equivalent or the Skoda yeti. Buy a good car a tow bar is a bonus, but readily available used. And just pay a man to fit it

I have considered all those but not found one that meets the criteria. I also looked at getting a towbar fitted. Of the ones I checked they all came out around £600. That knocks down the money available for the car.
I regret selling my Range Rover but I didn't think I would be allowed to drive again. I really shouldn't listen to medical people!
It is a chore but I really just wanted an opinion on the Nissan as that is what is available close by

Why not buy a Freelander 2?

Because my brother has one and we disagree on everything. He really laid in to me when I bought the 90 so I refuse to give him the satisfaction......

If it helps my colorado at 170k is getting to the point big stuff needs changing as its wearing out.



I've not heard anything bad about the nissan so go have a look and if it's not rotten or hanging get it bought

Is that chassis rot? I am hoping the seller will put it on his ramp for a proper inspection as I cannot get on the floor these days!
