No it won't work on a 3 pin plug....

Little reminder that running a 250a mig set off a 240v 3 pin plug isnt a good idea. Especially when someone has added a short length of 1.6mm mig wire across the fuse.
I was using the set today when it started playing up -started to check the usual bits when someone shouted fire!

32a 3 phase plug now safely installed!

Look closly at the second picture; its still smouldering!

Radio still works mind, or we would have had to shut the shop for the day

i presume the welder is dual voltage?? as u said its wired on 240v and now u run it on 3phase on a 30 amp supply it looks to have a bit of 2.5mm 3 core flex on it . so who was the nerd that wired it to a 13 amp plug in the 1st place . mind u i see this sort of stuff all the time. another thing was it pat tested for safety ??? with it having the plug on ?. probably not

Pat tested it, it had a plug (instead of bare wires & machsticks ) so he said it was safe.

I have seen this done on a "well known British-made car modifying television show".

Even my Clarke 150TE makes the plug go warm when I use it on the higher settings so those pics are not too much of a surprise if you attempt to use a high powered industrial welder on a domestic plug.

anyone can pat test. the rules are as long as its done by a competent person

I'm an incompetent person but have found through experimentation that UK 13 amp plugs (even with the correct fuse) don't actually like to have anywhere near 13 amps through them. Quality ones with good fuse holders are better, but they are getting more difficult to find. I replace them when they start to smell like a train set, and last one needed a new socket too.

when one goes change them both
at once the weak over heated plug softens the copper contacts in socket .which overheats the new plug and and back to square one good tight contacts is the secret

Pat tested it, [ a gentelman named Patrick undertook a testing procedure ]

Aye but what does 'competent' mean? Even the HSE are hazy on it's definition. Having 'skills, experience, knowledge and training' is what they say but they leave it to the employer to judge who they say is 'competent', which is all well and good until it goes wrong and then they (the employer' has to justify it.

I once had a workmate who was working off the top of a live lift car, with a 'competent' person at the controls. Turned out the lad wasn't a lift engineer but a brickies apprentice. The lift 'somehow' moved unexpectedly and the guy on top of it lost part of his spine.
