Strength (Tensile?) testing webbing things I've made

My pet hate, dogs pulling on leads. I accept it whilst we’re tracking but not if we’re out for a walk. I spend a lot of time training my dogs to walk at heel on the lead or off.

Mine too. If a dog is dragging it's owner along, then that dog has been allowed to develop the idea that he/she is not required to behave and listen to the owner.
Not only does it suggest to me that the owner is clueless and lackadaisical in their responsibility to their charge and to the wider public/neighbours said pooch will come into contact with (at speed potentially) - but it's also a recipe for a lifetimes grief (of the dog).
I see locals being towed along, and of course with Fido barking it's head off incessantly - with a total lack of effort or attempt to correct/stop the behaviour. Does my head in, and I have to bite down the urge to say something (esp. When my next-door neighbour is a bloody awful owner who should never have a pet).

i take my dog out every nite and im on on my mountain bike using an extenda lead if i want him to pull me along i just shout cats and he can pull me at 25mph we went past the speed camera and it clocked us . when walking he never pulls barks at other dogs and is fine . a couple bring unruly nasty dogs by and growl. hese only a whippet and got narked and nearly took an alsations head offthe bloke was well choked

Your problem with a lot of this testing commentry/replies is people assuming someone is holding the lead.
A lot of people will tie a lead off to something solid when they need to leave a dog or secure them outside a shop, etc, in which case your shock loading just went up massively - as well as the knot in the lead adding a massive stress riser.
As someone else mentioned, fatigue over time from the cyclic loading and also dirt/dust wear from getting embedded in the leather or cloth might be something you want to look at depending how long you expect things to last too. Same for things getting wet or being used wet, etc.
It's the usual trick with testing - how far do you want to dig into it, as it can be a massive time sink.

I'm relatively relaxed that for an 8' lead tied to an immovable object (Using say 18" of the lead), then even the largest of dogs would have a problem approaching 200kg (Half of my expectation) of pull from a standing start, if using a collar. For a harness, there must be slightly more risk.

I can only really confirm the strength when new - as rubbing anything over jagged rocks for example would inevitably reduce the integrity.
I will test it when soaked wet though, as that can happen from the very first walk.

@Kram you know there's a calculation you can use for stitch strength if you can assume a thread strength - you may not need to get that machine out:. Sailrite stitching

Thats the difference. The 2" webbing is listed as 3T rated on the advert.
Interesting that Sailrite also use HowNot2 for testing Good site, I suspect my small machine wont have the power for stitching this and may have to be done by hand.

You could do similar to impact testing, where they test a sample as is and a sample with a small nick/notch in it as a stress raiser. That would give you a good idea for an item with a bit of time/wear on it.

My Husky will do this even with a halter on no matter what I try to train her - she wasn't mine originally and it's impossible to get her out of it when she's been used to it for a few years. I'm not sure what saying something to me would magically fix there.
The German Shepard was the same until she got too old for pulling - she was a rescue, same thing.

Embedded bad habits / behaviour - very hard to change, and with some breeds nigh on impossible.

Husky / Malamute aren't very biddable and a bit nuts at the best of times (a mate has 2 Malamutes, and I think I'd go insane if I had to live with them). One of a few dog breeds that I'd not really consider owning - too much hard work!

Saluki's also seem incredibly stubborn and difficult (they are far from daft, just incredibly obstinate and willful).

Most of my dogs have been Collie / Whippet / Greyhound Cross Lurchers.
It's like they gave an Off Switch indoors, they settle and are quiet.
Walking to heel, sit, stay etc. fine.
Take them outside where they can be run off the lead - and they really came to life!
(I used to exercise mine daily in the local open Forestry Fire Road for years - they'd charge off on the 3.5-mile each way route, and I'd do my best Stig Blomqvist impression in the car to keep up with them).
Very trainable, though the one thing you'd never eradicate fully was their thievery lol. Far too smart to pinch something while you're anywhere nearby... but after that, if you left food out, all bets were off!

I wish these two would respond to some training, even with a halter on the Husky almost takes my shoulder out of the socket. And she never stops just continously pulling no matter how much you correct here, even to the point where she's struggling to breathe herself, stubborn bugger!

It’s a long time since I was involved in using webbing straps professionally, but I do recall a certain percentage of the width was allowed to be cut / damaged before it was deemed unfit for use.

Thanks for that - would you mind if I rewrite that as 2-3 mm on a 50mm wide strap means it should be taken out of service.
My leads are typically 25mm - so a 1 - 1.5mm cut means it should be withrawn from service.
I'm comfortable with that.

Strange though it is, I haven't yet come across a British Standard for lead/collar manufacturers.

They do, however, test seatbelts with normal wear and tear or notches

Id say thats a bit over the top. No ones going to suddenly die if a dog gets free, its not like the average family dog is going to maul a 4 yr old to death.. oh.

This is for climbing auto belay webbing, which is PPE and the only thing holding a person upto 12M off the ground.
