My Daughter who lives in Gravesend had a MOT on her MG3 today car passed ok, They told her that she needed new Front discs and pads as there was a slight vibration and that a rear wheel cylinder was weeping and needed new brake cylinders, shoes and drums costing £640. I think it sounds very expensive, are the parts that or are trying it on or is the going rate. I live in Ireland so cant help her.

Are they main dealer prices, if they are then I imagine a good local independant garage would be cheaper.

Leaking wheel cylinder may contaminate the rear shoes but the drums will be fine cleaned up.

. I will get her to take it to another garage. ThanksA quick look on Brakeparts shows the front discs and pads would be around £100, rear shoes are £30 but they don't list wheel cylinders
Personally if it was my daughter I would be encouraging her to out that car and buy something more mainstream. It may seem counterintuitive but while it's got a fresh MOT is the best time.
Owning a car where parts are not commonly available is a recipe for misery.

How old is the car, they have a 7 year warranty which should cover the cylinders at least.
Easy to say, but why do you think she's driving am MG? Because it was cheap. And you're suggesting she spends more on a mainstream car - not really helpful is it?
There are loads of MG dealers around the UK - at least if you buy the bits from them you won't be buying chinese rubbish... oh, well, not rip-off chinese rubbish anyway...

If someone is on a budget then running a car where parts are readily available new and used is always going to be a better option. At no point did I suggest she spend more money. I believe a leak is advisary,unless its affecting performance - many many years ago, my mate took his trials car to the guy who does my MOTs - leaking brake master cylinder on single circuit brakes - advised the leak, passed the car. Said that's what the manual said, daft as it seemed . . .

Pretty normal for here I'd say.
Either way, I'd be fixing the wheel cylinders with new shoes, and that's it. And to repeat,
MG3 parts are readily available. Maybe not as cheap as pattern items though.
I bought the wife a 2014 mg6 to replace her old Astra the other day - an itch I wanted to scratch as much as anything, it was £4000. An equivalent Astra - twice the price. £4k buys a lot of spares.

Genuine question - he’s worn the discs out on an electric one ?? Does it have regen ?
How much was the MOT? half price MOT's are usually done by people looking for the extra work. Did they put it all on the advisory sheet?
You can get vibration if you come off the Mway harder than you should then hold the pedal down on the ramp, gives you a glazed patch. Either sandpaper or a good hard brake from 60 to 30 when it's clear behind can shift it.

Appologies if I was, but I looked at it from purely a cost aspect. There's a reason that there are loads of MG3s on the road, and it's not because they are better cars, it's because they are cheaper.
