DeWalt DCD996 18V XR chuck removal

The chuck on my DeWalt keeps loosening and is hard to tighten . Replacing the chuck seems to be my only option and it looks like a proper PITA job . Can the original chuck be stripped down to clean without having to remove it ?

I normally give them a squirt of acf 50 , and work the a few times ,,, blow out with an air gun

then replace them as I should have known better than to even bother in the first place.

I read an article recently Re: the correct way to tighten a chuck is to tighten as much as you can and then turn the chuck back one click.

It's nonsense, that releases the ratchet so the unloosen easier

I have tried this , It does not release the ratchet, the rear one partial turn does not loosen the chuck, Just checked on youtube and there is quite a few vids on the subject,

probably the same as most chucks ,, small screw inside on left hand thread , then an allen key and a good tap wit a hammer.

I've done it on the smaller version with the plastic chuck...I bought the gearbox and clutch unit together (after I burger-ed the screw when I tried to remove the chuck by turning the screw in the wrong direction...it was indeed a left hand thread I believe....or it was super tight...never found out for sure!!!).

Mine was a DCD776...the gearbox & clutch cost about £39....was very easy swap to do.

Clutch with gearbox on ebay for yours is £60....so theres a planB if it goes a bit wrong.

996 you have to knock the whole shaft out then heat the back of the Chuck with a torch to melt the lock tite
10mm Allen key in chuck
Swift whack of a hammer going away from body parallel to the body
Should come out in one piece
Can damage the transmission though

Best way is to open up drill completely and dismantle transmission

no screw . they have to come to bits by the looks

I don't recommend messing with the gearbox...stuffed full of tiny bits.

On mine doing the clutch/gearbox together was a 10 minute job ....but its a different model.

gods ,,, thats hardly a step forwards ,, probably saves about 3p for the screw when they are made ,,, I like things that are easy to fix ,,,
