I retired from making hammers the other week, but the resin we used is a 2 part that was created for the job by a specialist company. My ex boss wouldn't sell you the resin, but you can send the hammers/axes to them and they'll rehandle them. I don't know the cost, but it's not extortionate (a lot less than a new hammer) and at least you'll know they are safely attached. 28lb sledges are the heaviest they do, the resin is designed to both stick and absorb the impacts you really don't want a head coming loose.

Thanks for the replies, there are quite a few to do which doesn't say much for whatever it is the manufacturers are using. I have tried araldite type glues but they are not liquid enough to get right down into the hammer heads and fill the gap between the head/shaft, ideally needs something thin that will pour into the top and set. Dont think there is enough value in these to pay for a professional repair and p+p both ways. Is the hysol a liquid or a paste?

Sort of a gloopy paste. Right between the two I’d say.

How hard would it be to make something up so you got as much adhesive in as you could plus a bit of surplus then forced it in under pressure? Make a dam with blu tac, that sort of thing.

If you couldn’t make something round the head then what about a pressure vessel? Ie 47kg gas cylinder with the top cut off and a flat plate of Perspex you can clamp to a flange welded round the lip? Doesn’t have to be posh.

Tyre valve in the Perspex for an inflator to go on.

Doesn’t have to withstand a lot. You’re not going mental with it, just a reasonable bit over atmospheric to encourage the resin to go in the holes

I would say fibreglass resin is the closest in consistency to what we used, but it might be too brittle. Run a bit of hot glue round the handle so the resin doesn't run down the handle.

Assuming this is for personal use the slower the set of the glue the more time it has to seep into the joint.
Standard 24 hour epoxy has worked well for me on wooden handles that rattle.

If it's work then bin it.

I thought this will be fun, he put the 10lb hammer on the floor and drilled straight through it with his cordless drill and a 8mm bit. I couldn't believe how soft the steel was.

The USA is amazing for that thing that may seem totally obscure here. I fibre glass handle specialist who'd have thought? We just need a trade deal so there is no import tax.

Most hammers are only en8 or 9 so not stupid hard. Only the face is heated, quenched in water when there's only about an 1/8"-1/4" red, no tempering. Putting a pin in only lasts for a bit before the glass above it pops out.

You are right, warmed up the hammer head with a blowtorch and poured the araldite into the end, it went liquid enough to fill the void all the way through. Left it on a rad for a week, will see how it fairs up with some abuse.

I worked with a bad tempered Scottish fitter & one night things were not going his way & he threw a ball pein hammer across the workshop, hitting the wall where I was standing seconds earlier!

Even though he was large, built like a gorilla & worked as a bouncer at weekends he saw a side of me that night that scared him!
