Thanks I’ll keep that back as a thing to bring out if they get to big for thier bridges when I move on to the claims team.

In fairness to the NFU they haven’t been that bad to deal with.

Always found NFU good never had a problem we have insured with them for garages contracting and private for 50+years.

Take off the 40% should leave you with a payout of £2000-2500 and you keep the vehicle.

Aye they initially offered me £3000 which I have now got them to up to £3500 just because it just went through an MOT and had 4 new tyres which is in line with the Land Rover owner mags valuation. So that leaves me with £3500 if they take the vehicle minus my £250 excess so total £3250 or £2100 minus excess so £1850 if I keep the car.

They were moaning about the mileage being so high and how they were being very generous with their offer etc etc being £500 more than a higher spec one with less miles and same age and it affecting the value but I have generally found mileage isn’t a price factor on these ones past a certain point it’s more the service history, what problems with the car and MOT status.

The passenger side was done in and a small dent on the driver side when I bought it I assumed at the time someone before someone had reversed into a gate or a trailer. Never found a reason. Though I know the passenger tail lights from a breakers as it’s marked up as that.

As above don't let them have the car as depending on the value of selling it they may dont let you have it back

Mate had this on a vw and they sold the car from under him he asked to buy it back they said as it was a cheap car and the storage cost was racking up they let it go to save money basically

I know it is far too late but I have to say that if that had been me, unless the police were already present on the scene - I'd have just stuck it in low, driven it out (or got a tow) and driven it home carefully and repaired myself.
I've seen worse driving about daily, and once insurance are involved it is invariably going to end up costing you more in the long run.

I know it is far too late but I have to say that if that had been me, unless the police were already present on the scene - I'd have just stuck it in low, driven it out (or got a tow) and driven it home carefully and repaired myself.

I did try driving out if I had had some max traks/waffle boards and a shovel or even a saw/ my chainsaw I would have possibly managed too didn’t call the police didn’t want them involved, fire brigade went past on their way to an accident further up the road about a mile and they reported it too them. Was hoping recovery would just come and tow but they insisted they wouldn’t come out in case in needed specialist gear and I had to contact my insurance, it out though didn’t know how damaged the car was at the time. Should have just called one of the 3 local companies I know directly and asked them to come out but slight case of shock doesn't help that.

Yeah - dont worry about it. The whole thing will have happened in 20 secs seeming like five mins and whats happened has happened. Easy for everyone to say you should have done x,y,z but you go on autopilot sometimes when this stuff happens and the fire truck driving by and reporting it wont have helped!!

Needs thinking about before involving the insurance company? Likely a local repair and a non-written off vehicle with a decent resale value (without that “written off” tag attached to it.

Set against increased future insurance cost and possible loss of NCB, the advantage of u=involving the insurance company may even be a definite negative!

If I were to ‘ditch’ my little car, I doubt I would even consider telling the insurance company. Simply write it off myself, what with the value of it, the excess on the policy, the NCB (even though it is a protected policy), etc, etc.

True but you are allowed to sort stuff and then inform them if no one else’s property is damaged.

Ouch. Sounds like a case of really bad luck and bad timing.

Higher premiums never stopped people driving like idiots - usually because the worst offenders don't bother with it in the first place - which is another reason why everybody pays so much.

Thanks for that , till you pointed it out I'd always understood it was part of your legally binding contract with your insurers & nothing to do with the road traffic act requirements .
. Just googled about such things , I put in " Do I need to inform my insurers if I have an accident where no other vehicle is involved and no one injured ? " , Several sources say different even if no other vehicle or is involved and no one injured . here is one of them though they do say notify the insurers that no claim is being made the report is for information only and get them to acknowledge the letter ( I myself I wouldn't use an email if I can help it as I've found they often disappeared)

I had a very very minor bump changing lanes in standstill traffic a few years back. I literally left some tyre marks from my Land Rover 110 on a 5 series bumper as I barely touched the car. The rubber marks were wiping off at the roadside.

We exchanged details. Went on our way. I thought, there is no way he will claim for that, but then thought just in case i would let my insurers know. They said thanks for ringing, they would leave a note on the system and if nothing in 6 months close it.

Fast forward four years, I rang them to get a quote on a new car. They ran through my claims history and i was confused as they were talking about something I didnt recognise. Then it clicked and it was the incident above. Apparently he did claim, ended up costing thousands for whiplash, physio the whole lot. Noone told me it ended up in an actual claim. It was utter fraud too - if I was going 2 miles an hour I would be surprised.

Anyway - I am glad I phoned them regardless of whether it is they or the RTA that requires it otherwise I would have been in more trouble when the fraudster did claim. I was disappointed they paid out without asking me first as I think it could have been contested personally.

I hit a bae company beemer a few years ago in my 90. Came round a blind bend on a 60 road and he was just sat stationary about 50 yards ahead. Admittedly I made a mess of the back end but two occupants, a manager and his wife. Coppers turn up and lo and behold it’s the wife’s sister. She takes a statement off us all, I hear him telling her that he should have pulled further up the road and so he’s partly to blame etc. insurance assessor comes out to look at my motor and tells me about the 5 claims for whiplash and how lucky I was it wasn’t worse. He couldn’t give a toss that the statement taken was by the occupants sister. 25k in total!
