Ring Rolling Thin Tube

Best way of remaking this tubular component?

I have a set of powered ring rollers, but would have to turn a set of dies. Never rolled tube only flat bar. Not sure if even suitable.

As you can see it's thin wall and around 18-20mm diameter.

Original has a split most of the way round circumference. Possibly formed from sheet?

The Part is over 100 years old.

Tell a lie i have rolled some 30mm box section in a gentle curve and that worked well

I was curious because it does look hand formed. This is one way.

Looks like fun but no idea if it scales up!

as its thin wall tube easy enough to make wood dies for it

if you can get 180 degree bends in the right size, I'd cheat and use a couple of them

The dies used to manipulate the tube are fully machined, from a single billet of A36low carbon steel or 1018 mild/low carbon steel depending on the CLR. The counter die uses a 954-C aluminium bronze head with a UHMW plastic slide.

or possibly know someone with a conduit bender (although I think the radius may be a bit large)

a few years ago I did make a bender for 1.5mm wall thickness 16mm o/d tube

and how the bending die was cut

or on a smaller scale, a tube bender for 3mm o/d stainless steel tube

If you are to make it from tube, seamless would probably help you whatever method you choose for the curve. On something that small and tight, the weld seam on a seamed tube can make the bend misbehave.

Desperate solution: make two circles red hot bent from solid round bar, mill off the top half of each, form channnel inside with ball end mill and rotary table, weld together.

Steel hydraulic tube would be your best bet for this, you can wrap the smaller diameters of that gear around a wooden stake and the side wall wont collapse.

I understand that Musical instrument makers use pitch which is then melted out afterwards but that is brass not steel. Good luck Brad let us know how you get on.

I've picked up some ¾" to have a practice with.

Actual tube seems to be about 20mm diameter but is very rusty so hard to tell
