I been using this lot for years for hosting - without any problems.
Hear this - you ring them and a human actaully picks up a phone - unreal I know - but true!

My problem is that I have a website designer who used to be really good but now just doesn't give a fig. He is just unhelpful. The website is hosted on Siteground and he told me yesterday they don't support Thunderbird. Well, they do - there's advice on their website about how to set it up and I already have one email account working with them, but having been having lots of problems opening up a new account.
Mostly, people like Thunderbird and people like Siteground. I just have this ahole IT guy

No experience of using sitegrounds but it looks fairly straightforward - you just need to set up Thunderbird using their guide for IMAP and SMPT.
Where you may run in to issues is if the domain isn't hosted with them and the mx records haven't been set up properly.
So the question is, 1) Do you have access to your sitegrounds hosting control panel? and 2) Do you have control of your domain?

No, the website guy I use has control of that and is being most unhelpful. Siteground host the web which is registered at 123-reg.
I only found this out yesterday, so have downloaded the Siteground guidance and will have another go at getting the new account to operate.

Do you pay him, or do you pay sitegrounds and 123 reg directly?
If you are paying the hosting directly then you have every right to have access to the control panel and the full range of services they offer.
If you are paying him for his design services and he is offering hosting via sitegrounds as part of the package, then unfortunately its up to him as to if he wants to provide that functionality - regardless of if the hosting provider offers it or not.
It sounds like you already have one email address working, but you want to add another?
This shouldn't be an issue if you are hosted on a dedicated account, and it should be quite trivial for him to set this up.

I pay the "webmaster" and he sorts everything... in theory. Used to be a great guy and I don't know why he's changed. I've been told not to sack the old one until i've got a new one and downloaded as much of the site as possible in advance. Maybe not quite so simple.

I have searched for your WEB site using TheWayBackMachine and there is nothing until I get back to 2010 and that is not complete. For example on the about page is this:
It is not even filled in with valid information - that is the template text for a new site. Perhaps I have the domain name wrong (I used the eMail address domain).
There is no chance of downloading the original content - if there was any there in the first place. Yes, TheWayBackMachine does not always get it right but it is unusual to have over a decade of nothing. If there is any proper content, your Man has it under lock and key and he may claim to be the copyright owner - you would need to check your contract.

Perhaps it is all some mis-communication and any moment now, all will be sorted.
