I am on the look out for a startrite bandsaw for my workshop to do some wood / metal cutting. I have been offered a 3 phase 0.9KW 18 series saw, but my workshop only has single phase. If i were to buy an inverter / VFD unit would anyone be able to tell me the current draw when i were to use the machine?

We’d need the motor plate for accuracy, but assuming you mean current at the single phase end, I got:
Assuming 0.85 efficiency: 900/0.85 = 1059 W
Assuming 0.8 power factor: 1059/0.8 = 1324 VA
1324/240V = 5.5A.
Startup surge somewhere between 3-5X that so about 16-28A.

My last question is, if i found a single phase unit like a 301 / 352 would i be able to use a PWM speed controller to get it to a slow enough pace to cut metal (with the right blade of course)

Somebody has to say it so might as well be me.
Cutting wood and metal on the same bandsaw is a fire waiting to happen. Especially with something like a 301 where the buildup of tinder can be extreme. Slow burn too so you won't find out until the whole thing goes up several days later...

No, not unless its powered by a brushed motor which it almost certainly won't be.
I have a Startrite 24V10 - it is awesome. Mine is 3 phase but would run on single phase with an inverter.
10 speeds in total. 2x gearbox and 5x with the belts.
I use it for wood all the time and metal occasionally . Nowhere nasty for fires to start - I hope
Biggest problem I find is that you need a very coarse blade for cutting wood and a much finer blade for steel. I HATE changing blades! The blade I have on at the moment will cut thick ali fine and wood so I cut steel in the horizontal mainly.

There is a little bit of a surge when you first switch the inverter on as it has to charge the capacitors inside it, but way less than for a single phase motor.

Yes I should have qualified that as you won’t get motor start up surge - a decent brand will have limiting resistors so you shouldn’t get much “power on” inrush, and what there is will much less and of a much shorter duration than a motor start up.

Teco inverters I have worked on, have a thermistor on the input which is shorted out by a relay contact, to prevent surge on power up…the thermistor allows the dc bus caps to charge up without a surge, once the bus volts come up, a relay contact closes permitting full load current to be drawn.
