I've got an oil leak on a steering box output shaft. The radial lip seal has worn a groove and there is some corrosion around the area. I've tried to sand it smooth and replace the seal, but it's only made it worse. I need a permanent left-field solution (a bodge in other words). I've heard of devcon or belzona being used to build up material on shafts, but these don't come in small quantities. What's the cheapest stuff I can use that will do a good enough job?

I don't know the size of the shaft. I'll have to remove the steering box at the side of the road, and because London, I can't leave it parked up on a yellow line during the week whilst I wait for parts. This will be a weekend job so I think best to go with some sort of chemical compound.
The shaft is corroded over an area. A double lip seal might work, but then it might not. I'd rather not take that chance or i'll be trying to fix it for a third time.

I repaired a Mercury 70 I think it was outboard years ago with them. On the bottom of the powerhead on the crank 2 lip seals ran back to back, crankcase one side, leg open to seawater & exhaust the other. The mariner servicing the engine said it’s scrap due to corrosion where the seals ran. 2 new seals & 2 speedi-sleeves from Bearing Services & the job was as good as new, actually probably better as the sleeves are stainless, Mercury in those days didn’t use stainless for bits that ran in water! The bearing services rep that I knew said they sell well for repairing axles on commercial vehicles where the oil seals run & wear a groove in.
