Fiesta losing oil and down on power

3 cylinder Eco boost? Fantastic power. Non rebuildable.

From what i understand the whole engine assembled in a hydraulic jig.

New crate engine if anything goes awry.

We rebuild them on an exchange basis here (Ecobangs) - mostly when the wet belt shreds and fail - blocking the oil pick up in the sump.

We have a spare engine we put in customers cars - then we rebuild the old one that we take out on a stand when we got some spare time - ready to go into the next poor customers car.

Crank bolt is murder tight in these - beyond tight. There is no keyway in the bottom pulley - only a new type of "abrasive disc" to hold the torqued up parts together.

Only non rebuildable engine I have found yet - is certain type of VAG engine mostly in Seat cars - 1.2 and 1.4 TSi lumps on a certain engine code - the main crank - main bolts are into the block with some type of non reuseabe "raw bolt" thing. Same engine in a VW Golf/Polo - has an extra letter on the engine code and does not have this type of main bolt fixing.

I bet there is more "non rebuildable" engines out there - I just not found them yet. With the move to "multi platform stuff" - same car or van with same engine in it - but different badge on it. There are not that many different engines out there after about 2016.

Well I whipped the torx screw out this morning and sure enough the valve is toast.


No sign of any orange rubber diaphragm at all
Where it fits, a cone shaped recess, was a lot of oil.

Ordering a replacement part as we speak.

Question on the tube though.
It was not held with any sort of clip at the valve or solenoid end which seems odd. All the images I've found seem to be?
The tube is very flexible and can be squashed flat with minimal effort, seem wrong to me. Even this morning when cold it is as soft as anything.
Looking at replacement tubing and it all seems to be silicon which is surely also quite soft. Would a more rigid hose like fuel hose not be better?

Anyway looks like it will be off the road for a while. Why did it have to happen at new years.
Also there is still the question of whether this caused the issue or failed due to another as yet undiscovered issue....

I’d have the sump off and check the strainer as that’s going to be blocking that and costing you a new engine

Oh and just to add the oil level is fine, so I can only assume that like blood and milk, a little oil goes a long way when spilt!!

When my son had the Ecoboost, we were told that about the engines. We didn’t need one as it turned out to be a broken/ bent pin on a pc board. Never looked any further into it, so never knew if it was correct or not.

Also being an RSOC member and knowing a few lads that have rebuilt them at home

Perhaps it stuck down the pipe somewhere blocking it?

Sadly Fiesta's move to greater efficiency ecoboost from the very reliable Zetec larger engines, like so many 'better' diesels, has resulted in a far less durable powerplant and the total lifetime running costs very likely > any fuel savings. If only govts could stop meddling in every aspect of car designs.

A friend in the motor trade advises me to give used ecoboost small Fords a huge miss. Apparently the boosted V6's in F150 pickups are very reliable, but not so the tiny 3cyl versions.

Lots of the problems arise from people never changing the oil or doing any other maintainence (I might be wrong but i believe the wet belts are only designed to run in certain oils?) or using them repeatedly for 2 minute journeys so they never get the chance to warm up properly, etc.

Yes they've got a bad reputation but I bet a lot of that's as much bad maintainence as bad design.

You are correct to a point but like any car there is always a known weak point to fail

Well came home from a lunchtime walk to find the postie had been.
New one way valve from Ebay for a tenner.

Duly fitted with a new piece of silicon vacuum hose and a couple of hose clips.

Quick drive and all seems to be fine again. I'll be off for a longer drive tomorrow so fingers crossed.

I find it strange no engine light came on for this. After all lack of a correctly functioning turbo would have been a major issue I would have thought?
Tried my Bluetooth OBD2 reader but it only showed readings, not fault codes.

Further research of the past few days has revealed that a fix others have used is to use the gutted valve as just an outlet barb for the tube and fit an inline one way valve in the tube.


At some point in the not too distant future this car is going as we need something a little larger in the boot and with four doors.
Currently pondering a Skoda Kamiq ... only issue is they are a bit new to get a three year old one which is what we are looking at age wise.

Anyway fingers crossed it's fixed.

You're right, they're clamped together hydraulically and then released to tension the blocks evenly - can you rebuild it and just torque the bolts up like normal? Sure. Will it lead to OEM-class reliability down the line? No, the blocks are so thin they can warp and twist easily in assembly.
As an aside the *abrasive disc* is a common thing for high tension critical joints - it's usually impregnated diamonds that imprint into the surfaces, bumps up the friction level from the usual 0.2-0.3 to about 0.6-0.8 so it massively increases the load carrying capacity. They're supposed to be replaced on reuse but you can get away with them a couple of times usually.

There's a guy racing top class rear wheel drive autograss ( chevies, twin Bussas, racetech even) - he has a turbo version of one of these performing very well. I would think it's not a crate engine, but one built especially for racing). So they must be rebuildable, somehow..
