We are with Octopus Energy and to be fair they have been ok during the last 2 years of carnage.

Believe we are around £160pm gas and electricity.

I was always a big NO to to DD but there was a reason we went over a while back (my wife is quite good at dealing with the bills).

This is why I won't have direct debit or a smart meter, I pay quarterly cash, they can't take more than I owe them. It might cost about £5 a quarter to pay cash but I think it's worth it for being in control.

However. The girlfriend of Mrs79 is an advisor for OVO on their web / phone chat. A more brain dead useless creature you will not meet.

I am not holding out much hope…..

The two I spoke to were completely brain dead and seemed to have no clue about how energy billing was done.

We have been trying to get with octopus for a few years but they won’t take anyone on for the last few years.

I have no energy DDs....they send me a paper bill and I simply pay it. I just don't see the point of giving them the money when I can put it in a separate account myself and look after it on my own!

I know someone who got accidentally billed over £3k...the energy company seemed to be in no rush to sort the issue out....no thanks I'll give the DD a pass!

Who are you with and is there any difference in tariff to paying DD?

I think we're with shell energy ....there is a difference to the bill...maybe £5 off here or there if you do the DD but in my view not worth it vs letting someone pillage your bank account at will!

We simply put some aside each month so when the bill comes in we simply pay it and are done...IMHO the fewer DDs I have the better as they're the best way of leaking funds without realising it!

Sky were terrible....they'd give me a discount when I called them up....then in no time the monthly payments were up to £90+ a month. In the end I had to cancel the bloomin lot...and with the savings we pay for a whole suite of channels and have money to spare!

Luckily my sky dish blew off in a storm and nobody would go up the chimney to fix it so it was an easy sell to the missus....

As an aside....I was speaking to someone the other day who was saying that a lot of electricity is used to warm up water in the washing machine and dish washer...he was suggesting fitting a temperature mixer (blending valve) to bring the water up to say 40C....anyone on here done this trick?

Someone quoted a while back gas was a 1/4 the price of electricity for heating things up, don't know if that was still the case but if so I makes sense to feed the Washing Machine from your Combi Boiler.

Gas is roughly a third the price of electricity

Trouble is depending where your boiler is fitted in relation to it your washer, it will still fill with cold water before the hot water gets through to it.

Just checked and I moved to Octopus in November 2020, the only reason I went there was when doing the annual "compare the Meerkat" on energy suppliers they were the only big one that didn't force me to have a smart meter fitted.

This is where we are so far behind, my pal's house has a hot water "ring main" in his house (in the US) and there is a constant source of hot water circulating the kitchen, heated from solar or other renewable and when the tap calls for hot water it is almost instant, giving the boiler time to catch up.

I must say I was impressed at almost instant "ON" and considered the majority of plumbers I have had to deal with over here and right away I worked out why we don't have comparable systems here.

Done it in bigger houses, and is the norm for commercial. Secondary hot water return, needs stored hot water so not suitable for combis
