thanks for the reply. in my naivety I didn't think it was too complex! ha! oh how id love if mine was like the bottom one. Top one looks more like mine, mines still worse though. So what did you do to make that bad weld?Welcome to the forum
All as above, plus... is this your first (or nearly first) try? If it is then I wouldn't start with something so complex - start with flat sheets first and get the technique dialled in just on the single sheet before you start trying to sellotape two (or four, in your case!) bits together.
This kind of thing (top weld bad, bottom weld good)

please see attached photos for settings. I was also getting too much wire sticking out. id start with about 10mm but as I start welding would end up with 60-70mm?What machine? Gas? Wire? Settings?
no the whole thing was a mess! ha no gas. I'm guessing that makes for a better / easier weld then?I would flip the reel over so it is feeding from the bottom, but that's just me.
Looks like you started out okay but then it went to ratpoop. All of the symptoms of no gas but I suspect you are going with gasless wire?
how much wire should stick out when I start? then when I start welding do I keep the wire away or have it touching? I read somewhere I should keep it about 10mm away?Try using a helmut next time.....
Just kidding. It looks like self shielded flux core, and your holding the gun way too far away, and your wire speed is too slow.
I don't worry so much about the length of wire sticking out of the "Tip" (that's the important part)how much wire should stick out when I start? then when I start welding do I keep the wire away or have it touching? I read somewhere I should keep it about 10mm away?
Ive just checked and yes Im using flux corded wire and my polarity is set correctlyIf you're not using gas, you need to use a flux cored wire, and the polarity needs to be set correctly.
I can't quite see, but it looks as if you have it set to use gas? (Top right of the picture shows the torch as being +ve I think) so if you aren't....
Think you may be right. If you're not using gas, you need to use a flux cored wire, and the polarity needs to be set correctly.

I've just tried this on flat steel and was a little bit better at first but then it started sort of spitting, couldn't get a continues line?Welcome to the forum
