I agree! Very handy tool! I had a similar folding extendable rule made by Stanley, but unfortunately it met an untimely demise a few years ago. I might get another one some day...maybe sooner than later, since you reminded me of it.
For my current project, the specialized tool I made works really well. As noted, the L-shaped rule keeps it perpendicular to the beam and the locking feature prevents the measurement from slipping, so that I can reliably transfer the length directly to the board.

And does the plug socket go back on? No it bloody doesnt!! The black plastic box moves in the wall and appears to have sprung threads! Impossible to start them!! Not sure how best to sort it, other than a new box.

Got a second hand multifuel boiler stove to replace an open fire back boiler, hopefully soon. Old handle was a right pig to use, no leverage and nasty corners.
Odds of scrap turned, welded and a quick polish and we're grand. One new handle, fitted and working, just need to see how long it'll last. £35 for a new handle "saved"
Going to be a long time to pay off the welder and lathe at this rate but we're getting there.
