Foil bcked gloves

[Hitch]

Been doing some fairly hot welding this week, got a foil backed glove for left hand.

I tend to trail a finger as a steady on some joints. I was quite suprised to have burned a hole through the foil backing on the little finger so soon. Were they just cheap ones, or do they all do that?

Hello Hitch,
Have you looked on jody colliers site "welding tips and tricks" they have what looks like a woven fibre glass sleeve that slips over your glove little finger for just your problem may be something else you could utilise.

I use a fibreglass mat, no idea what it's for it came out of a boot of a car I bought years ago, but the car had a lot of builders **** in. I have real shaky hands and have rest my hand on something.

Funny...i always seem to burn my index first...
Seems like you have to try and find another position for your left hand Hitch?
I've burnt my index quite a few times and learnt very quickly how to get it out of the way....

the welding mat is used by plumbers.they put it behind the pipework when they are soldering or brazing to stop the heat from the blow torch burning walls etc.

good option for a welding glove

ps does anybody know if they do tig gloves without the cuffs?

Aw yeah! i remember see them do that when they had to change my water heater!
But it caught fire tho.... he had to drop it in the bucket with water first!

Think the idea of the foil backed gloves is more to reflect radiated heat than to protect your hand when it comes into contact with hot metal.

Have tried several makes over the years and to be honest have never found any of them to be very substantial

The finger guard from Jody's site looks very good and he can mail them out to you for about a fiver! might get one myself.

We used to wear the silver gear in the foundry, full suit as well as gloves when pouring
