More roof help

I have just been up in the loft to get the Christmas decorations. And it is very wet up there all the trusses are damp on top and there are large puddles everywhere. The thing is we haven't had rain for a couple of weeks just a bit of snow last week and when I last went up there after it was chucking it down but no puddles. But the amount of water up there seems very excessive for condensation.
I'm just wondering what the forum consensus as to the problem and solotion is.
We have no extractor fan or anything that I can think of that would be letting air from the house up there.

The old type 1F underfelt...you have condensation from the cold spell. more prevalent these days when homes are sealed up tight with composite doors and double glazing, plastic fascia boards etc to eradicate drafts. years ago when your house had drafts it could breath and breathable membrane roofing felts were not needed.

Thanks. Just seen the lap vents. Are they any good or money for old rope. Would I be better off just biting the bullet and putting new membrane in ??

new membrane is over half way to a new roof...3 vent tiles on each slope would help move a bit of air around but at the expense of introducing more cold air into the loft.

Exactly the same as mine a decade ago - some vent tiles and no more wet timber. Can see the tide marks from all the previous occurances.

I had that problem in a house I used to own built around 1980’s the roof space was permanently damp in winter, I got a roofer to install some vents and that solved the problem.

The neighbors are having there roof done so I asked the bloke doing it how much to have 4 vent tiles put in. He said £500 which I though seemed a bit steep, could you shed some light on the price and what's involved. But then proceeded to tell me that he doesn't know why I would want vent as it's not condensation but water in the membrane being let through by the freeze thaw cycle. Bear in mind the condensation occured weeks after any rain fall.
The roof is approaching 50 years old so I am aware it is reaching the end of it's life. But the tiles and bitumen membrane are all intact and no leaks during even the heaviest rain fall.

what is your roof mad up of

bitumen felt does fail at nail points so could be letting water in along the rafters

i note the insulation layer single or double layer do you have a layer over the hatch

what are your eves, if you have any or is it a plain flat against the wall guttering fitting

do you have any central heating pipes up there or any type of water tank

It's a 1970' ex council house. It's got the standard molded concrete tiles. Played over the bitumen membrane. Single layer of fiberglass insulation. None on the loft hatch. No heating or water systems up there. I know the house isn't particularly well sealed in the kitchen and bathroom in a couple of places so I know their is an airflow up the back of the dot and dab which I need to sort. The only other thing about it is it has an exceptionly shallow pitch.

the pic says its not that shallow however its shallow enough for the heat in the roof to make that felt droop down ( summer )

loft hatch isnt helping as you will get blead through of heat from the wood

as goes for the water in the loft area its more on the range of heat creating the damp if you do put air vents in also fit another layer of insulation up there

i dont think you can use the soffit board vents yours looks like you will need slate vents and possibly need to use a ridge vent but thats optional it does help in summer to get rid of high heat put is a pain to fit
