I was wondering when they first appeared, but then recalled MacArthur sprouted a pair occasionally.
They're older than I thought - 1936 or so.

I disagree these people do exist, they are statistical anomalies they are wired differently.
Every generation will have some, often the bad and misunderstood type.

We had a senior manager once who was an ex-marine. The company (not Pilks) was involved in the 'defence' industry and employed a lot of ex-forces people. 'Cause he was ex-forces and liked landrovers (as did the director), he was given the job of site manager on a nod-and-a-wink.
He told us all stories of his exploits - being in the SBS, injuring his back parachuting over France, being shot out of a torpedo tube(!), his time in Northern Ireland and, if he was alone with a female, hed tell them about the disembowelled bodies he'd seen hanging from trees. On one memorable occasion, he met with an ex US Navy Seal who we knew from another company in the industry, and started ribbing him about how the SBS was 'harder'. He was an absolutely **** manager.
One of the other lads in the campany was also ex marines, and he didn't think that some of the stories added up, so he made some enquiries...
Turns out that the bloke didn't make it through basic training and had never been anywhere or done anything! Pure Walter Mitty.
He runs a bicycle repair shop on Anglesey now.
P.S. Enyoying SAS Rogue Heroes very much!
I am led to believe those who've been in the sas don't say they've been in the sas, unless they completely sell out like Ant Middleton and co.

A work mate of mine's father was SAS during WW2 - when you got to know him, he had a few stories to tell; a more pleasant, genuine guy you couldn't find. He succumbed to a norovirus in his 80's and he has the coolest headstone in the local graveyard with the 'Who Dares Wins' badge on it - sadly missed

Soundtrack is good but it didn't fit for me. A scored soundtrack and era specific music would have worked better imo

Chap I know is an ex marine genuine, he's the politest kindest person you could wish to meet. Though he is also mad, if I'm climbing on his job but left my kit out im pretty sure he'd be up with me. He's in his 50s top top bloke.
Real bloody grafter aswell.

Those men will come to the fore when the time comes.
I had a mate back in the seventies, skinhead, always in 'bovver', he just loved fighting, not angry drunk man craziness, he would happily fight anybody who was interested just because he enjoyed it.
Surprisingly he ended up in the Commandoes, and went to the Falklands, and came back telling us what a great time he had had. He also had some photographs that were pretty graphic, he thought they were brilliant. Strange lad.

I know a couple that went to Iraq they never got over leaving active conflict. Became a PMC.
Again not bad or outwardly aggressive
I know of (not know well at all) less than a handful of the real deal.
One was a local lad a bit older than me, quiet, but pretty tasty on a motorbike - not the guy you'd automatically expect.
Others were all different characters - there isn't a stereotype.
As has been said - one thing they had in common was you never heard their service mentioned by them, nor find that everyone around knew about it (quite a feat in rural Wales, where gossip is unreal ).
Like someone else said - I knew of the series title, but assumed it was some daft reality show (sounds like the cheesy title misleads & does the programme a disservice).

I've worked with two ex special forces guys in the oil field industry, one SAS, one SBS, both were fairly small chaps, both were fairly quiet, neither ever bragged or even spoke about their experiences. I only found out through my friendship with a fairly high management chappie in our company.
The SAS guy showed us some amazing tricks for getting knives off of people, surprisingly simple once you knew, though I doubt I'd try it myself with a real crim, with a real knife.
Apparently the vast majority of those who pass Selection for Special Forces aren't big guys - 5'8" is pretty typical.
Seems that the Tests and Endurance is so ultra-demanding that the big guys really struggle - all that body and muscle mass just uses up too much energy - so it's the wiry tough little b**gers that make it.

My mate Neil who’s now no longer with us was like that. Good friend but I still couldn’t really describe him.
Brown ish hair. Average height. Average build. Unremarkable really. He did ‘stuff’ in Ireland in the 80’s / 90’s when being unremarkable was a good thing.
Seen photos of him with a Kevin keegan haircut and a M16 over there somewhere.
Proper clever bloke. He was a radio amateur. He had a HF set up in his car and used to drive about with a morse key Velcroed to his knee having conversations with folk! Learnt it in the regiment and he could send and receive it like you or I talking. No paper or anything.
Had some funny stories when he got to know you. I mean years not hours.
