Genuinely exciting, until it isn't. I have had clients asking if they can delay PV projects because we will have fusion soon. Advised them that is not a good strategy

Cant ignore solar, it's as reliable as the day is long
There are some new developments in battery/leccy storage, read an article on asphalt being used with lithium a few years ago, not sure how far that has come on.

Batteries made with asphalt can charge in 5 minutes

I have some 300kw batteries on commercial sites, they do exactly what it says on the tin.

Charge from the PV (and CHP on one site) and reduce the grid supply for the evening peak 1700-1900

PV will work up in Orkney. Just as with elsewhere, it's necessary to factor in the capacity to deal with overcast days, when solar panel output can drop to 1-2% of rated. Wind generating capacity would help, but wind turbines can be noisy. I remember the wind turbine by the community shop at Timsgearraidh, in west Lewis, can make quite a racket! A steerable solar panel array would help to make the most of the long summer days, especially if the plan is to export to the grid.

My thoughts exactly, the minor detail about the megawatts needed to run the lasers was omitted from the initial story breaking

And it didn't include all the energy required to build the thing and all it's ancillaries.

All those things that get lumped in when bashing wind turbines.
