Stupid, but got away with it (just)

Using the mitre saw on its stand to cut some 50mm dia round wooden bar. My bloody face visor was literally arms length away from me, on the bench.

Saw dug into the wood and in what felt like 5 milliseconds there was a bang, the wood slammed into the guide at the back of the saw and was spat out at what felt like 100MPH into my forehead.

I packed everything up and went back into the house - could have been much worse and clearly my head wasn't sufficiently in the game to be doing what I was doing.

Ouch did you have the wood tight up against the back of the saw before cutting or was it floating?

I'm sure we've all taken a chance at some time (possibly even Parm...) Just be glad you got away with a minor injury this time - and I'm certain that you'll never take a chance with it again.

Great question - it was floating, which is almost certainly the main reason it all went south so quickly.

you was bloody lucky normally that can throw them out at some lick i think the bang deflected some of the force otherwise it would have got you

always use the back guide its really not worth silly mistakes like that

I’m sure all of us DIY guys have taken short cuts myself included, nowadays I’m ultra careful, my brother in law is blind in one eye due to a mistake with a power tool, Thankfully you’re ok, and I’m sure you won’t do that again

Round stuff is usually very dodgy stuff to cut with a chop saw. We had a few close shaves in our Men's Shed with guys cutting up logs for green woodworking projects, one of the reasons that use on the chop saw is now limited to a few trained members, if they want any cut sooner they can use a handsaw!

One of the worst ones is cutting a curved branch with a gap between it & the fence. When the blade is nearly through the cut closes, binds on the blade & is fired into the fence at 3000 rpm! You'll only do it once & it does make you pucker!

Totally agree - my (flawed) risk assessment told me it was ok as it wasn't fully round - it had a ~25mm flat section that was resting on the saw bed.
Loads of lessons to be learned!

Cutting thin logs with a chainsaw has similar problems, when doing that I cut them at a 45 degree angle, stops them spinning and flying off at any direction

I did exactly the same thing a few years ago.

Got away without any injuries, unlike the saw, bent a couple of tungsten saw teeth, bent the fence and damaged a gear tooth or two. Gear teeth haven't healed yet, need ear defenders and earplugs to use it ever since!

Glad you got away with it too.

A few lucky escapes there. Done similar myself where you think this'll be fine and then it either bites you back or you get away with it and its not until afterwards that you think, "that was a bit silly".

Be careful out there, we're not very good at re-growing body parts.

was riving a length of wood down a few weeks ago and cut into a knot. half of it flung out at a great speed and cut in to the back of my hand had to pull it out went in deep ,food for thought on wearing goggles . could have been my face

Cutting round stuff is also dodgy on a Bandsaw, The work wants to roll into the blade & if it catches it will kick the work out towards you violently, Did this a few years ago & the wood took a great lump out of my thumb. If its round stick in in a V rest as close to the blade as possible.

Other thing is never use an angry grinder to cut steel if you have left a tin with a pound of gunpowder in it nearby & forgotten about it.
I have told the story on here before, needless to say it was quite exciting.

Sometimes its better to cut from the front going backwards if that makes sense. Also a negative rake blade is best to help stop climb cutting. I have a couple of radial arm saws that can be fun to use.

Keith a sled is good for cutting round stuff on the bandsaw, stops it changing position mid cut

I've had this too. I just won't cut round stock on the bandsaw table or round wood in the mitre saw., Unless clamped on the mitre saw or in a vice on the bandsaw.

My dad lost his left eye from wood thrown from a very large circular saw in a woodyard. It was the late 60's so no heed paid to PPE and no compensation.
