Shower panels

I'm just doing our ensuite and thought about panels however my thinking was that you probably couldn't give them a good scrub like tiles without scratching them also limescale has imprinted the old shower doors so would the same happen to shower panels. In the end I went for 600 x 300 tiles.

I recently ripped out some sheets of shower board, the ply type, before checking the cost, yikes!

Partner couldn't find a new set that suited budget or taste so have gone to tiles. Hopefully don't regret it. I mean, I already a bit, especially as I managed to duff up the shower tray in the process, but any more than I already do.

Looking at one manufacturer, there's an aluminium extrusion for internal corners and for the bottom of the panel etc. That's for laminate panels.

Thats the ones I used in our holiday cottages. Theres an ali angle around the tray is the actual seal, the. Panels sit on top. With an extrusion up the corner. They are very good, veryeasy to keep clean. But blooming expensive. Money well spent though.

Tip, dry fit it first, as you only get one go at cutting. In one of ours I had to but and scribe the corner as it was so far out.Have a helper thesheets are heavy and awkward to manouver on your own. Id also suggest going to touch and feel samples, sime are a high gloss finish, other like mottled.

My mother in law has the cheap upvc stuff looks ok, but it basically silicone at everyjoint. That has discoloured gradually and now doesnt look so good.

That's how we decided to tile our wet room 17 years ago after fully screeding & plastering walls , putting on a one way water resisting Ditra membrane with water proof cement on the floor first so it went up the walls 8 inches Then down walls from top to bottom , putting a trace heat matting on all the floor then tiling the floors in Pilkington 100 x 100mm slip resist tiles . It's outperformed all other wet rooms I've ever seen that had boards as the shower walls .
A lightning strike took out the heated floor as it was on at the time we got hit , that and loads of other fried things were sorted out under the house insurance ..

The whole floor and the trace heat mats were replaced by someone who knew what they were doing............ for a change.

The main reason for doing a proper tiling in big tiles is that a mile or so from here there is a quick boarding shower company called Aqua Wave or something similar .
I popped in & made enquiries ,wasn't happy at the condescending arrogant attitude of the guy so bided my time to find people who had used them . ( Found a few over the years and none we particularly enthused by them )
They are next door to the hair dressers my las & I used to use, on many occasions I was able to see what was going into their big skip .. loads of fusty rotting shower panels. Plus they only put a years warrantee on what they were installing
