if you use one of those plug in trips designed for use with lawn mowers etc you will only trip that rather than anything else , they are perfect for testing stuff

if the supply is fitted with a 30ma rcd and a plug in rcd. both will trip at once with an earth fault not just the plug in one

I use one , it just trips without tripping anything else , like you said depends on set up, for me its just saves the hassle of the lights etc out in the house.

Good idea. I’ve got a couple of those things.

The plug in one will only trip first if the house one has a slightly longer time delay, some 30ma RCD's trip in less than 10ms and others at 40 or more.
Schneider usually go off at 28.8 ms!

As @Agroshield says it could be dirt.
That thing looks filthy inside and if you disturbed some of it it could now be tracking across from the switch to earth.
