I use the 10v power from the VFD to run it and the sensor wires go to the VFD first then get split out to the sensor cable.

Some VFDs will display the rpm directly on their own display (based on the frequency and number of motor poles). You do need to read the manual however, both to see how it is possible and what parameters you have to alter to make the number meaningful.
It is easy to get the motor rpm on the screen, but on a lathe with a countershaft and then a three-step pulley, it is more difficult to get actual spindle speed, hence the standalone one above is a better option.
If you cannot put the sensor directly on the spindle, another option is one sold as a speedo for a bike - in this you input the wheel diameter and it converts rpm to speed. By 'fiddling' this number you can obtain a readout in mph that is actually spindle speed in rpm.

I have a 1960s MF4. I replaced the barrell switch with an aluminium plate that houses a 3 position rotary switch (fwd/off/reverse) and a potentiometer. Ive then run light weight shielded signal cable back to the VFD which is currently mounted to the wall not in an enclosure (the lathe, mill and tool grinder's are all in enclosures though). The motor is the original 415v where I dug out the star point to run on 240v. I have screened 1mm 4 core cable from VFD to the motor. You'll be surprised how often you change speed with the VFD once the control is readily accessible (which it wasn't without the pot on the drill itself). I use hi/Lo gear and the pot, not sure when I last moved the belt. The membrain switches on the AT-1 chinese VFDs are OK for occasional use but I wouldnt plan to use them long term.
