Not if you are changing tensioner, guide pulleys water pump etc . A bodgers way of doing the job and with something as easy as a CVH engine a long winded way of doing it

And SOHC (AKA Pinto).
I think it was one of those methods adopted by people who weren’t confident with engine timing (which I suppose can be daunting to some).
No use on modern engines though as you say.

Think tensioner washer/bolt is correct as it allows the tensioner to slide as you er tension the belt.Main crank pulley untouched, not too sure about the others, but the large washer and bolt holding the tensioner pulley on doesn't look correct
I said I wanted a whole new kit, tensioner, pulley and seals and that was what I was charged for.
Took a cam follower with it so had to pull head off to fix aswell

Supposed to be a small cap head screw on a slot on the inside of the tensioner

^^ When I first got my current car, I got my Indy to change the g/box (manual) and diff oils. He asked why I wanted them done as the stuff he drained was fine. I explained that I wanted the reassurance that I was starting from a known good point.
I did the engine oil and filter myself.

This is Audi's V8, it takes a while to strip down to this level but it's then a dream to work on. Keyless cam wheels don't cause any problems

I don't mind doing "floating pulley" cambelt changes - as long as I have the right timing tools.

We bought a Connect and then a Fiesta a few months apart, both with the same (Peugeot) engine, both with IIRC 120k mile belt interval.
The Fiesta's snapped at 105k and wrote off the engine; the Connect (on 101k at the time) had a new belt and waterpump within the week.

Yeah I’ve found they’re not really a problem to be honest. Personally I wouldn’t attempt to change the belt on any modern engine without the correct tools. It only needs the timing to be out by a fraction and at the very least you have an engine warning light on (and yes I’m talking from experience!).

One of the nicest engines I ever changed a belt on was the 1.7L Peugeot TD in the late 80s 309.
I think you put an M6 bolt through the cam pulley and a 6 or 8mm dowel through a hole to lock the crank, crack the tensioner and away you go.
They should have kept those engines, rather than the poxy modern thing with the cam lobes pressed onto a length of tube FFS...

Similar looking setup to the Subaru 4 cam flat 4 as fitted to Imprezas & Legacys. When you buy a new belt you wonder where its all going to go as its about 6ft long!
Can be done with the rad in situ, just have to make a special tool to remove the crank bolt! The belt swap is quite easy after you make a sketch of the belt route. Pin crank at tdc, clamp each pair of cam pulleys together with grips & start stripping. You could probably fit one in less than an hour & certainly a whole lot easier & quicker than doing a pug hdi engine transversely mounted in a 306/406!

After my dad died my mother spent a year trying to decide which of their two cars she should keep: her Stilo or his Megane.
My bro and I decided that the Megane should really have its timing belt changed whether she kept it or not but after spending an entire weekend I gave up trying to figure out how to do it without moving/removing the engine - you couldn't (as you may know) work in the gap between the engine and the inner wing.
We sold it quick

I've been driving pugs for the past 30+ years & do all my own servicing so I've fitted many cam belts on French cars. I have a few 'modified' spanners, sockets & locking pins that make the job easier but you are still trying to work in a 2" gap between engine & inner wing. I have a belt kit to fit on my dispatch van & I'm not looking forward to it as access is even worse, especially from the top!
I still paint pulleys. Even though modern engines don't need timing (electronicly) I've not used a timing light in a over a decade. twin cams dot the bottom draw a line across the two pulleys at the top. Get the bottom on and have someone to spin the cams in place while you put the belt on at the top a bit difficult to hold it yourself as it's pretty much on the Rock where it needs to be. Can't say I've ever needed any special tools. Might of modified a spanner or two in the past. I've never done the half cutting of the old one. Put a few fan belts on like a bike chain once or twice.
