Magnetic fire bricks

Just put a magnet down on a fire brick out of an old night storage heater and it sticks quite well.

Not sure if this information is either interesting or useful unless you want to build a mobile pizza oven and have an easy way to stick your price lists up....

I believe that they're made from iron foundry slag.

Interesting, I knew they were magnetic as they have a high iron content but only now have I thought of a use!

I need to get the induction wired up and see how well it heats them. I wonder if they have the same curiee point.

Mate used to work in a local factory that made storage radiator bricks. He had to wash his dirty work clothes in a dolly tub as the metal particles knackered washing machines. I'll ask him where the metal came from - possibly a local massive steel works (Shelton Bar )

This brick is a used one so they certainly get it back at night storage temps.

I've got a hog roaster that's wood fired, I'll check the ones in that sometime...

i took a furnace out of my flat in palace, left the bricks out side the front door as I wanted them for a project by the morning they were gone! weighed in by scrap man I new they had a high iron content

We made electro Magnets and were shocked to find the fire bricks stuck to them.

Now I feel old.

I didn't know this. I did know that if you stick a couple on a woodburner, they will kick out heat for hours after the stove has died. A mate of mine used to wrap a hot one in a towel and use it as a hot water bottle!

When I was a spotty brat, like many others I experimented with sodium chlorate and sugar making bangs. I wanted to moderate the burn rate to make a propulsion unit so I mixed in some dry powdered soil stolen from a flower bed at home.

To my great surprise I found that the resultant ash was strongly attracted to a magnet and I took a sample in to my physics master at school to try and work out what was happening. Big mistake ! This unleashed a huge investigation to what "Mawson 111" (youngest of three brothers at school) was getting up to in his bedroom

thats dense refractories for you, on some of the lightweight refractories (for use in glass making) they put the raw materials through rare earth magnets as iron will erode though the refractory almost like you have drilled a hole in it.
