Are the black and white LXT Makita Drills the same quality as the normal ones?

Bought one, it did not a lot of work and burnt out. Went for repair. Came back, same thing has happened.

Same here quality gone from makita if u ask me, if ur looking at any cordless tool you nearly need to be buying the dearest drill or grinder not the entry model if you plan on working it hard that’s my opinion

if its the tiny one with a plastic chuck they are diy level, not pro level. buy one of the good ones and youll have no issues.

The cheaper offerings are cheaper for a reason, Makita are still worth the money IMO, their spares can be cheaper than other makes too. I've only seen the 2 cheapest models made in white, I have them both in green.

Whats the model number? I got my cheap makita stinking hot more than a few times, it has out lived the 2 2ah 18v LXT batteries it came with but the gearbox failed so only have speed 2 which is fine for the easyfill and drywall adhesive mixing duties it's not relegated to.

I thought the white ones were some kind of special (anniversary?) editions.
My first Makita tools were a combo set of 10.8v drill and impact driver (white and black), must be 10 years ago. Since then I bought a 18v LXT combi drill in white and black. All have been great and have done a lot of work. The only failure was one of the 10.8v batteries.
The rest of my Makita gear is blue bodied and other than being newer and therefore brushless seems of similar good quality.

There's a chap of Youtube that does reviews of Makita power tools, and he seems to get hold of purple bodied models direct from Japan.

Makita are still worth the money IMO, their spares can be cheaper than other makes too.

Their repair service under warranty is good too. Had to send my backpack blower back recently. Contacted them just within the last few days of the warranty period. They arranged collection & delivery, & it was sorted with no quibbles.

I have a white drill and it has the exact same model number (except one letter which presumably denotes it’s colour) as the turquoise equivalent. It was exactly the same price too (body only). I seem to remember reading somewhere that if bought as a kit, the white stuff came with smaller batteries as it was supposed to be “compact”.

To be honest mine has been no problem at all; it wouldn’t be fair to compare it with a turquoise drill costing twice as much obviously.

I think that the different colour Makita products were used by different industries in Japan. For example Red would be used by civil engineering and white in hospitals or some such. I seem to remember the guys working on all the flyovers in Tokyo using red tools.

Where did you buy it? Big box stores like Screwfix get Makita to make them a batch of drills to a price so they can sell them cheaper. To keep the cost low Makita might use lighter duty components inside, giving a lower spec drill! Often if you google the model number on a Screwfix drill you'll discover that its only available from the Kingfisher group stores. The model number often has an extra letter or 2 added at the end to distinguish it.

I bought a drill kit from Screwfix when it was on offer for basically the cost of the 2 5Ah batteries, the drill body & charger were effectively free. The drill died after 5 mins use but was repaired under warranty. I wasn't really bothered as I only wanted the batteries for my non-genuine fakita grinder & nut gun which are ironically both going perfect after a lot of work!

It came from an online power tool supplier. It's a brushed DHP482 - no suffix after that number btw. Sounds like a bag of bolts and smokes.

Ignore my post above then! I do wonder however whether Makita have used different colours for different purposes over the years and/or in different markets. See the post from @JohnH above; currently in the UK the red tools are the budget range, based on older models I believe.

Mine is a DHP482W, with the W presumably denoting the colour. I’ve had it around 5 years now and it’s still going strong, but again (sorry to repeat myself!) it’s a cheap drill so won’t compare well to a more expensive model, regardless of colour.

My experiences with Makita drill are that any with the plastic gearbox housing are a waste of time as soon as the drill / gearbox gets warm the bearing race held in the plastic gearbox develops play in the housing.
The DHP486 has the metal gearbox and also proper quality metal chuck. There used to be a brushed version too however seems to have been discontinued.
