How would you lengthen a 22mm steel tube ?

Hi everyone.

I've had to fit a different sump to my engine to make the engine fit my buggy. Now the oil pickup is in the wrong place. It just needs extending by a couple of inches.

I only have a mig welder and I'm not skilled enough to make a liquid proof weld. I can braze though, so I was thinking to swage some tube and braze it on. I don't have a swaging tool but I have a mini lath to make a mandrel and a press to push it into the tube.

Unless there's an easier way anyone would suggest?

The oil pickup tube is 22.1mm outer diameter.

Probably the "I'm not skilled enough to make a liquid proof weld" applies to sump pans as well as suction tubes.

Surely someone close to you off here could do a liquid proof weld for you if you had to travel a few miles?

It's quite a restricted area to start putting joins and whatnot together. Bulging the pipes. If you cut the pipes and prep it, Mark it, take it to a welder/fabricator (so it'll take him 10 mins) will probably stich it together for you for a few beers on their tea break.

its a oil pick up pipe, not a pressure vessel, a tiny crack wont make any difference, a tiny drip back into the sump is nothing to worry about. if you're worried about your weld after you've done it, block the pick up off and blow though the pipe under water, any bubbles and just attack it with the welder again.

one of my first welds once I got a mig was to shorten a radiator for my central heating by cutting a section out of the middle and welding it back together......20 years later its still leak free.

Thanks for the ideas. When you all talk about it it suddenly sounds easy.

At some point I'll post some pics of the buggy build. I have the long travel suspension working, the main tubes of the exo cage were CNC bent and have been tack welded into place. I'm just finishing fitting the seats.

Surely even a solder (not a sodder!) would be fine in this application.

Well it could make a difference if that crack draws air and buggers his engine.

Nooo, if a suction pipe leaks, it sucks air in, and turns the oil into foam. I used to work on fork lifts, and if they got a tiny air leak on the suction side, they would be blowing foaming oil out of the tank breather in no time.

You can buy tube in short lengths from eBay, 22mm inside dia and weld or braze it. If you do weld, you can braze up any holes afterwards

When I used to have a TIG welder, if I messed up a MIG weld, I would go over it with the TIG to remelt the material and get it to flow into the right places. I always assumed I should never admit to using such techniques

I have noticed that 25 mm tube should roughly match the 22mm tube outer diameter if I grind out the ERW seam, so I'll see if I can use it as a sleeve.

I could. It's actually what I was planning to do with the whole buggy exo cage, tack it and then get someone else to do proper welds, especially on the roll hoop that gets scrutinised when entering events.

With the sump pick up, if I can match up a sleeve, I feel confident to that I can do a decent brazing job.

An alternative idea; cut off the mounting tab and heat/bend the current pipe until it's where you need it. Then re-attach the mounting tab, but longer.

No idea if sump geometry would allow this but might achieve what you need without relying on weld/braze.

Or, just put in more oil?

Edit; I've assumed it needs extending down. If it needs pushing sideways, my more oil comment will obviously not work. And the bending probably won't either!

I'm afraid it needs extending sideways. The engine came from a car with independent suspension and is being fitted to a buggy with solid axles, so the shape of the sumps and pickup location is different. I was able to swap the sump with another from the same Suzuki "platform", but the oil pickup couldn't be swapped and needs modifying.

Please explain how oil becomes pressurised on the suction side of a pump please

Suction will take the least resistance This means air will be introduced loosing suction GET THIS DONE PROPERLY ! BTW |I have more years professionally in cars, heavy vehicles, plant, marine engines than I care to think about.
