Out of common decency they should have asked, best to keep this sort of thing informal or it will escalate. I would be knocking on the door, not for anything other than to straighten out any misconceptions the neighbours may have and to find out what they intend to build. Bottom line here is your dear old mum needs to live next door to these people, as hard as it may seem and for the sake of your mother its best to try and keep it friendly.

Im in this camp, boundary disputes often spiral out of control, ownership of the wall, do the neighbours know who owns the wall? How is owner ship defined ? On the deeds, or was the wall built post creation of the deeds and therefore with in the boundry?

Frankly I'm also in this camp, I've got the inquiry in with the planning office to get the detailed plans, I want to have a civilised but informed conversation.

It does not take a genius to see they are looking for privacy over their garden, and they "seem" like decent enough people, I'm definitely not up for threatening anything and turning things sour.

and its not planning its land registry remember the earlier link i posted the boundary is never drawn up correctly for what you are paying for

weve lost land through land registry failure due to what was drawn up when we first moved into the property
to an idiot from land registry 20+ years after first land registry payed to survey the land, who then decided it needed to be in a straight line to match the property even though it was drawn up by land registry
to be then further asked do we have electric or water in the shed which we did have, I dread to think if we didnt they would have also removed that from us

and then wouldnt recompensate us by giving us our land at the rear of the house

land swapping in old houses is a real pain

ours is the oldest and owned all of the land around it and also the houses built onto it for family
