Any recommendations gratefully received

Got a customer who’s donk has ripped the splines off a PTO shaft (don’t ask) and I’ve been tasked with mending it.

From CNH its £1300 for a 2 part bevel gear (think diff crown and pinion) as it’s the forward PTO that faces aft, driven off the front axle. I wouldn’t call it a true PTO but it drives a mower deck or whatever.

I’ve tried Neill’s tractors and a few other breakers I’ve dealt with but no dice.

Anyone know of someone who breaks these, or what these are please? NH are adamant it’s theirs but it isn’t. I reckon it’s a Deutz in a blue dress but could be a landini as they’re Italian made.

It'll likely be a genuine CNH thing.
I've rebuilt the gearbox in the predecessor to that model, and it was a CNH thing.

I doubt you'll find one in a breakers, as there will be relatively few of that size sold in the UK, and it's still a relatively recent tractor, so most will be repaired should something major go wrong with them.
And it'll also be too new for much in the way of aftermarket parts.

I'd suggest contacting Malpas. That's where I got all the bits for the one I rebuilt, as it's owner wasn't happy* with the local dealer.
I sent them a message via their Malpasonline site (aka Sparex site), and they sent me the details for one of their NH parts guys. Guy was really helpful, and I'm pretty sure the parts were cheaper than the local dealer.


*Clutch release bearing packed in during planting, and as it had a crawler box, the only option was to keep running it, which led to the forward/reverse shuttle getting cooked. IIRC the dealer charged £6k to replace the clutch, but done nothing about the gearbox. They then quoted a gearbox rebuild at over £12k, as they wanted him to just buy a new tractor.


Alternatively, if it's just the splines, I know off an engineer who repairs shafts, but I'm not sure how well equipped he is to re-machine splines.

Thank you. I did see malpas in the search engine but not got that far down the list yet!

There isn’t anyone here who can do splines. It’s likely to get sold in the autumn next year anyway so it’s more to keep it limping on. Which is partly why he doesn’t want to chuck £1300 plus my time at it.

Must be a CNH dealer thing - they’ve charged him fortunes on this machine. It’s been split no end of times, which is why I’ve now got it.

That’s a plan but it’s getting one that’s the pain in the ****!

I use them a lot. I was looking at their catalogue earlier. They do the shaft at about £50 for the one I need.

I wonder if I can either cut the bad shaft short and weld a new end on, or cut it off at the bevel gear and bore that and weld a whole length of spline there. I don’t actually think thatll work because of seals and things but it would be a neater job than doing it on the end if it was at all doable.

The bevel is fine. It’s the splined end that accepts the pto shaft

Cheers @addjunkie never used them.

I have a plan C formulating- pair of bevel gears, and machine the inners to suit. Then a splined shaft welded in to one of the bevels. That’s the rough idea anyway.

I will see if HPC do part splined / part plain shaft. If they do I’m laughing.
