Power reducer

Is there such a thing as a inline power reducer, my generator is 8 kva but the plasma cutter I am getting has a maximum input of 4.7 kva

You don't need a power reducer, the generator is capable of producing 8kVA, but the plasma cutter will only take what it needs of that.

The plasma will only draw as much as it needs (4.7kVA to be precise), as long as the genny can supply more than that (Such as 8 kVA) you're golden, plug it in and crack on.

On igniting I suspect the inrush current of the Plasma might be rather more than 4.7kva anyway (Mfrs of leccy appliances nearly always assume it'll be used on Mains, so don't feel the need to mention transients / startup onrush currents.
Once running it's 4.7kva draw is my guess, so you might be needing all that your 8kva has to use your cutter anyway.

As it stands, that statement is confusing. It might be clearer to say that the input is the minimum needed from the supply.

The data plate on the machine is correct because the figure it states is the maximum the machine will demand from the supply.

It is important to understand the difference between supply and demand. My stomach demands a maximum of three loaves of bread a week. Hence any bakery that can supply only two loaves a week will not sate my hunger, but one that can produce 20 loaves a week will be OK.

I would ask the question: What happens if you plug in a 100W bulb to this generator?

That should, I think, indicate what might occur when other items are plugged in…. Up to the generator rating.
