Tooling , I'm going to order some tooling for my harrison 140 the tool holders can take up to 20mm I'm thinking of just ordering a set of carbide tip holding tooling from rdg to get me going should I go for 16 or 20mm tooling hss tooling would probably do to get me going as my first job is aluminium I've mulled over it for 2 weeks and now I need tooling yesterday what do you recommend opinion on here seems split on hss and carbide tip holders

Height of tool will depend on the centre height of the machine and whether a 16mm or a 20mm tool height matches that. No massive advantage between either.
If I had the option I’d get a selection of both. Hss can’t remove material at the speed that carbide can, but carbide can’t take the fine delicate cuts that hss can. Small diameter work lends itself to hss because you can’t get the rotational speed nor the depth of cut required for carbide to work properly. You might want a tool shape you can’t get in carbide so you can grind hss to your requirements. Carbide is much harder so it can work with harder materials where as hss would wear out quickly.

I'd avoid the RDG or other importers sets. Lots of decent branded tools pop up on ebay.
Generally what @Rrobson says is correct of negative tips, intended for large machines like yours. Deeper cuts are quicker, and you can predict a cut to get an exact size, avoiding the need for most fine cuts, so a lot of it depends if your doing this for profit or for fun?
Does not apply to non ferrous tips which are much sharper than I could ever grind hss myself, and PCD tips will give the best finnish on NF - they cant take big cuts but the durability is excellent.
The smaller positive ccmt06/dcmt07 inserts can take fine cuts in steel if you get the right ones, low nose radius and minimum depth of cut (often shown on back of box as Ap). This is what I use for most of my turning.
I'll rarely use HSS, mostly for boring holes under 10mm or radius/form tools.

These people are brilliant - and they make a lot of the tool holders themselves in Britain! I got the above tool and tips from them.

The quote you received all your inserts are 08radius, you’d be better sticking to 04 and below for radius.

This should be a good choice for your lathe, you'll need to chop the holder to fit the post.

On reflection, maybe the 'throw in the bin' was too strong. Can I change it to 'put in a bag and do not use until you are halfway through the box of brand name inserts'. By that time you will have learnt about speeds, feeds, finishes and materials and will know when problems can be attributed to the inserts themselves.
The listing says straight and left. Is that correct? If the 'left' one were an insert tool, it would be a 'right'. What I am trying to ask is if the naming convention for these is different to carbide insert tools.

I think it's based on the way the holder is cranked, ie to the left on this occasion and designed to cut with the saddle traveling left, rather than insert tools which I think are designated on material face being cut?.
i.e a insert right tool cuts from right to left and on the right side of the material being cut.

Just to clarify. They haven't manufactured their own for quite a while unfortunately. It was Jenny's son that did the manufacturing and maintained the website. Without any notice (the way Jenny told me) he decided to stop. Sold all the machines and the computers.
